Summary

  • San Antonio International Airport has seen record-breaking passenger numbers for the past year.
  • More airlines are adding new routes at SAT, with Viva Aerobus launching flights to Torreón, Mexico twice-weekly.
  • Other airlines are set to introduce new routes to California and Pennsylvania this week.

Officials at San Antonio International Airport (SAT) are reflecting on the influx in the number of travelers that have passed through. The airport has reportedly recorded record-breaking passenger numbers in the last 12 consecutive months.

It comes as more flights will be offered at the airport. One airline has already introduced a new route at SAT, while another two will do so this week, expanding the airport’s domestic and international reach.

“Adding even more destinations”

According to News 4 San Antonio, the airport has experienced a 7% increase in passengers compared to April of last year. Since May 2023, the airport has consistently broken its monthly passenger records. This year, April was the busiest month in SAT’s history, with 911,469 travelers passing through.

Jacob Tyler, the Chief Air Service Development Officer at the City of San Antonio Aviation Department, commented on the airport’s growth.

“More people are flying than ever before – and we’re constantly working on adding even more destinations to meet that demand. April 2024 was the first time we’ve surpassed 900,000 passengers for the month of April.”

Hello Torreón!

Airlines appear to be adhering to airport officials’ request to add new service to more destinations. On Saturday, Mexican low-cost airline Viva Aerobus launched new flights between SAT and Torreón International Airport (TRC). The service will occur twice weekly on Tuesdays and Saturdays on the Airbus A320 or A320neo.

“These new destinations are important to both our business and leisure travelers,” said Jesus H. Saenz, Jr., Director of Airports, City of San Antonio Aviation Department. “Torreon (TRC) is the fifth Mexican city from SAT that Viva Aerobus, Mexico’s ultra-low-cost airline, is now flying to. Also, SAT is one of only two U.S. cities with nonstop service to TRC.”

Viva Aerobus also connects SAT to Monterrey, Querétaro, Mexico City, and León/Del Bajío. The airline’s General Director, Juan Carlos Zuazua, spoke about how the new service to TRC not only marks a significant milestone for the SAT, but for the airline as well, according to Transponder 1200.

“This is our first route to the United States from Coahuila and, with this service, we link and strengthen the strategic relationship between the cities of Torreón and San Antonio based on cultural, educational and commercial exchange. Now, these two important economic poles will be closer than ever, with an air bridge distinguished by low prices, new aircraft and point-to-point flights for the comfort and convenience of all passengers.”

New routes to California and Pennsylvania

On the domestic side, two US-based airlines will launch new routes this week. On Monday, Southwest Airlines will commence daily nonstop service to Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) in California, and American Airlines will begin daily flights to its hub at Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) on Tuesday.

Thanks to the three new routes, SAT now has nonstop service to a total of 45 destinations.
