Almost all large and small airlines have a loyalty program that allows travelers to collect points (also known as miles) when they travel with the airline itself or its partners. That is not all, members can also earn loyalty miles through a wide range of purchases, including hotels, car rentals, online shopping, vacation packages, cruises, and fuel.
While many airlines allow patrons to earn miles on everyday purchases through the use of co-branded credit cards, American Airlines, having one of the most extensive loyalty programs, enables its AAdvantage members to earn three AAdvantage miles for each gallon of fuel purchased at Shell.

Shell partners with American Airlines AAdvantage
Shell has partnered with American Airlines to offer a new way to earn fuel rewards, just be signing up with the Fuel Rewards program and linking the AAdvantage account. Unlike credit card benefits that come at a premium of as low as a $99 annual fee, the direct use of the Fuel Rewards account enables a continuous accumulation of loyalty miles with American Airlines.
For example, an average passenger car has approximately 12-15 gallons of fuel capacity. Filling up the tank at Shell means earning approximately 45 AAdvantage miles each time. What is most exciting is 250 bonus miles upon joining the program, that is, over five times the full tank’s worth of points.

While this is of a great value, travelers with elite statuses with the airline may not benefit as much. In fact, the program has been replaced by specific savings (per gallon of fuel) based on the elite status. American Airlines also imposes certain conditions that members must ensure and meet to receive loyalty miles.
- By linking your AAdvantage account to your Fuel Rewards account, you are automatically opting in to EARN MILES at the pump. This REPLACES YOUR PLATINUM, GOLD, OR SILVER status and you are no longer saving 10, 5, or 3 cents/gallon.
- To switch how you earn – MILES or FUEL SAVINGS – go to the Fuel Rewards app and select American Airlines under “Link Partner Accounts”
- AAdvantage miles earned through this offer are limited to 20 gallons of fuel per purchase, per vehicle.
- AAdvantage miles typically post to your account within 7-10 days
