Charter operations to schedule services.
The carrier’s name, Avelo, was only adopted in April 2001, when the airline looked to move its focus away from chartered services and enter the scheduled market. This saw the carrier’s history as Casino Express and Xtra Airways disappear for the sleek look of Avelo today.

Established in 1987, Casino Express Airlines was created as a charter airline to shuttle passengers on Boeing 737-200 aircraft exclusively to Elko Regional Airport (EKO) for the Red Lion Hotel and Casino in Elk, Nevada. During this time, the airline dabbled briefly in scheduled services when launching Tahoe Air, which provided regular services from South Lake Tahoe Airport (TVL) to Los Angeles and San Jose, California. These services operated in 1999; however, they didn’t last long.
History continues
Looking to broaden its customer base, the airline decided to rebrand as Xtra Airways in December 2005, focusing on acquiring more customers with a new brand strategy. The airline looked to sports teams, businesses, government agencies, and the like to offer private charters. From 2007, the airline operated two Boeing 737-400 aircraft dedicated to operations for Direct Air, an airline business based in Florida.
Andrew Levy, a former Chief Financial Officer at United Airlines, took the helm in 2018 with a decision to adopt the ultra-low-cost strategy and transform the airline’s future. In February 2020, Levy announced the airline’s new holding company, Houston Air Holdings, and that the airline would receive new Boeing 737 aircraft.
By April 2021, the new name and identity as Avelo was adopted, and the carrier started ticket sales on its services to and from Hollywood Burbank Airport. Fast-forward to today and Avelo now operates seven Boeing 737-700 and nine 737-800 aircraft to 44 destinations across the United States from its bases at Burbank, New Haven (CT), Orlando, Raleigh/Durham, Santa Rosa, and Wilmington (DE).
