Many airlines paint aircraft with special liveries for special national or social events (such as Pride month).

Airlines paint a wide range of special liveries on their aircraft. Carriers often paint special liveries to show support for their national athletic teams during the Olympics. Acknowledging how the Lord of the Rings boosted New Zealand tourism, Air New Zealand painted a very large and impressive livery for The Hobbit movie (with the NZ Herald decrying it as one of the ugliest ever flown).

Loganair

Loganair is a Scottish airline and the largest regional airline in the United Kingdom, measured by both fleet size and passenger numbers. Recently, Loganair unveiled the United Kingdom’s first “Pride Jet.” Loganair painted an Embraer ERJ-145 in classic Pride rainbow colors on the forward section of the fuselage together with the airline’s name, “Loganair.” Loganair’s CEO stated, “We’re firmly pinning our colors to the mast – or the fuselage in this case – as an airline that is not only open to all but as one that is a vocal advocate for equality.

The aircraft also has the text “Proud to be Scotland’s Airline” with the world’s “Proud to be” in bright colors. The aircraft is part of Loganair’s sponsorship of 2022’s Northern Pride in Newcastle. Loganair’s main base is in Glasgow, but it also has smaller hubs in Aberdeen, Inverness, Newcastle, and Edinburgh.

Jetstar

Jetstar recently painted an A320 in Pride livery and then worked to fly it all around Australia

Jetstar is Qantas’ low-cost carrier and has a history of supporting the LGBTQI+ community. It has reinforced that position by painting an Airbus A320 with a “Flying with Pride” livery. The livery was revealed in December 2023, and the jet was then put on a heavy domestic service schedule. It flew on routes across Australia, including Adelaide, Ayers Rock, Melbourne, the Sunshine Coast, Hobart, and Launceston.

The livery was emblazoned across 30 feet of the aircraft, while the star symbol and the name Jetstar on the front of the aircraft were also rainbow-colored. The livery was revealed in time for the Midsumma Festival in Melbourne (an annual queer arts and culture festival).

avianca

avianca is one of the world’s oldest airlines and has prominently painted Pride livery on its aircraft

avianca joined the effort to support Pride, painting an Airbus A320 with Pride rainbow colors on its tail. The airline also has a long history of promoting equality and it said that the livery was symbolic of a tribute to equity, inclusion, and diversity.

avianca is the largest airline in Colombia and has been the nation’s flag carrier for over 100 years. Speaking of the new Pride livery, the CEO stated, “Our airline is an avianca for everyone. We are a team of more than 13,000 people with multiple races, cultures, gender identities, sexual orientations, values, and ideals – everyone is welcome here!”

Lufthansa

Lufthansa has done its part to put “love” in Pride month and sought to welcome all to its services

Lufthansa supported Pride Month in 2022 with a more subtle livery. Instead of the typical “Lufthansa” painted on the front of the fuselage, it had “Lovehansa.” The first half of the word “Love” was painted in Pride colors while the second half (“hansa”) was painted in the airline’s standard black. There was also a welcome panel at the main entrance door for the aircraft with a special rainbow design.

Lufthansa stated at the time, the livery would be kept for six months. Lufthansa is the flag carrier of Germany and is one of the largest airlines in the world. It owns several other European carriers (including Austrian Airlines, Discover Airlines, Swiss International Air Lines, Eurowings, and Brussels Airlines.

Alaska Airlines

In 2022, Alaska Airlines revealed a more flamboyant Pride design. It adored one of its Airbus A320s with a “Fly with Pride” livery and aircraft outlines painted in Pride colors along its fuselage. Another little aircraft in Pride colors was added to the main entrance door. The engines were also given a dash of Pride coloring.

Alaska Airlines is one of the major US airlines and is mostly focused on the West Coast of the United States (and, of course, Alaska). It serves over 100 destinations domestically and internationally (mostly tourist destinations in Mexico, the Caribbean, and Central America).
