In preparation for the upcoming UEFA Euro 2024 football – soccer – championship, which will run between June 14, 2024, and July 14, 2024, Lufthansa, the airline based in the host country, will introduce six ‘Fanhansa’ Airbus A320 aircraft into its network in addition to other tournament-related developments.

Six Fanhansa aircraft

The German airline has reintroduced the Fanhansa aircraft, which replaces the typical ‘Lufthansa’ writing on the side of the fuselage of its aircraft with the word ‘Fanhansa,’ introducing six Airbus A320s with the modified livery. However, Lufthansa will also enhance the onboard experience of these six aircraft with additional UEFA Euro 2024-related easter eggs, including unique headrests, food trays, and special chocolates.

In November 2022, Lufthansa had also introduced a Fanhansa aircraft. The Airbus A330-300, registered as D-AIKQ and still active within the airline’s commercial services, was painted in the livery until April 2023. At the time, Lufthansa also added the words ‘Diversity Wins’ next to the ‘Fanhansa’ name, saying that,

“Lufthansa is a byword for openness, tolerance, diversity and bringing people together. The company enables its customers from all nations and cultures to connect, and welcomes everyone aboard, regardless of gender, age, ethnicity, religion, nationality, identity or sexual orientation.”

The aircraft will take Germany’s soccer team to its Middle East training camp.

In addition, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines will have a live ticker onboard their aircraft that fly domestic routes within Germany and Europe. The airline will offer match commentary via text in real-time, offered to passengers free-of charge. Travelers will have to use their own electronic devices to access the real-time text commentary.

Passengers traveling with Allegris-equipped Airbus A350-900 aircraft and on Discover Airlines long-haul flights will have access to the ticker, enabled through Lufthansa’s FlyNet portal. The airline also promised that its flight crews would provide score updates as much as possible.

Starting November, only Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) will receive Lufthansa’s Airbus A380 aircraft.

Furthermore, travelers visiting one of the ten host cities could receive a Lufthansa-created European fan scarf. The airline described that the scarf’s design resembles its route network and has already been a popular souvenir. The scarf is also on display at Munich Airport (MUC), combining its ‘Yes To Europe’ campaign with the celebration of the football – soccer – tournament.

Responding to the UEFA Euro 2024 tournament

Meanwhile, the company said that its group airlines have seen an additional 200,000 additional bookings for flights to the cities that are hosting the tournament. Apart from Gelsenkirchen, whose nearest airport is Dusseldorf Airport (DUS), nine host cities have a commercially active airport that serves flights from/to the respective cities.

On May 15, the Association of German Commercial Airports (Arbeits­ge­mein­schaft Deut­scher Ver­kehrs­flug­hä­fen, ADV) issued a statement that the association expects 2 million passengers to visit Germany during the month-long tournament, with over 500 additional flights being coordinated with the country’s airports.
