Airports and airlines worldwide are making great efforts to deliver on-time performance for their customers. The aviation analytics company Cirium has identified the world’s airlines and airports with the best on-time performance in May 2024.

According to the latest data, airlines in the Middle East and Africa showed notable improvements in their OTPs. At the same time, carriers in North America and Latin America faced certain challenges due to increased flight cancelations in May 2024. Despite challenges, carriers in Latin America retained the top positions.

According to OAG, “an aircraft is on-time when it arrives within 15 minutes of the scheduled arrival time or departs within 15 minutes of the scheduled departure time.”

Similar trends were seen in airport OTPs for May 2024, as airports in the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America had the fewest cancellations during the month.

Leading the way: Aeromexico

Mexico’s national carrier, Aeromexico, led the way in May 2024 with an OTP of 86.75% despite a two-point decrease. The airline operated a total of 17,164 flights during the month. Benito Juarez International Airport (MEX), Aeromexico’s primary hub, experienced a four-point decrease and concluded the month with a slightly lower on-time performance.

Second on the list was the largest airline in Latin America, LATAM Airlines. The carrier demonstrated an OTP of 86.65% and had the most flights among the top five airlines, with a total of 44,763 flights.

Japan Airlines ranked third with an OTP of 86.40%, reflecting a nearly two-point decrease from last month’s OTP of 88.17%. The Spanish low-cost carrier Iberia retained its fourth-place position globally, with an OTP of 86.17%.

Saudia showed the most significant improvement, leaping from fifteenth place last month to fifth place, following a six-point increase to an OTP of 86.09%.

Airports’ leader: King Khalid International Airport (RUH)

According to Cirium data, the top five airports with the best OTPs in May were from different continents. However, Latin America led the way, with two airports being in the top five.

Despite numerous conflicts affecting the region, airports in the Middle East have experienced one of the lowest numbers of flight cancelations, as per Cirium. Globally, King Khalid International Airport (RUH) in Saudi Arabia topped the list of airports with 88.23% OTP in May 2024.

The second airport with the best OTP was Oslo Airport (OSL) in Norway, with an 87.97% OTP and 18,252 flights accommodated in May 2024. Meanwhile, Jorge Chavez International Airport (LIM) in Peru was the third top-performing hub. The airport demonstrated excellent OTP performance with 86.86% and 14,593 flights conducted in May 2024.

With the highest number of flights, Haneda Airport (HND) in Japan secured the fourth top-performing spot. The airport handled 40,077 flights in May and demonstrated an 85.99% OTP.

In fifth place was another Latin American airport, Arturo Merino Benitez Airport (SCL), with an OTP of 85.86% in May 2024.
