A United Airlines Boeing 777 widebody aircraft bound for Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) in France was diverted to Gander Airport in Canada due to a reported hydraulic leak.

The incident details

On June 9, 2024, a United Airlines Boeing 777-200ER widebody aircraft, registered as N794UA, operated its routine scheduled flight UA915 from Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in the United States to Paris Charles de Gaulle International Airport (CDG) in France.

However, the 777-200ER widebodywas forcedto make an emergency landing due to a hydraulic leak. According to a report by theAviation Herald, a passenger reported that the flight crew announced the hydraulic leak as the reason for the diversion.

According toFlightradar24.comdata, the aircraftwas divertedto Gander International Airport (YQX) in Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. A substitute Boeing 777-200ER, registered as N204UA, arrived in Paris approximately 17 hours late. The journey from YQX airport to the final destination took four and a half hours.

The aircraft involved in the incident was United Airlines’ 26.6-year-old Boeing 777-200ER, according toch-aviationdata.The aircraft, featuring a special Star Alliance livery, has been a part of United’s fleet since November 1997.

It returned to revenue service in May 2022 after being stored formore thantwo years during the global COVID-19 pandemic. The aircraftwas scheduledto be ferried back to IAD on June 9, 2024, but the flightwas canceled. Theaircraft returned to IAD on June 11, 2024, and later that day, it operated the IAD to CDG route again without any further incidents.

The aircraft can accommodatea total of276 passengers in a four-class cabin configuration: 156 in economy class, 46 in economy plus, 24 in premium economy, and 50 in business class, as per ch-aviation.

Interestingly, the incident on March 8 was one of four involving United Airlines aircraft that week. A Boeing 757-300 experienced an engine failure on a flight from Hawaii to California, a 777-200 bound for Osaka lost a tire during takeoff, and a 737 MAX 8 was involved in a runway incident at Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH).
