The Gulfstream G800, the newest aircraft from Gulfstream Aerospace is sure to be a groundbreaking aircraft and an extremely popular business jet, but what do we know about it and what is its range expected to be?

How the G800 compares to other Gulfstream aircraft

First introduced in October 2021, the Gulfstream G800 has strong similarities to its sister aircraft. It is the same size as the G650 but has a new aerodynamic wing design and has taken the engines from the G700. The cabin of the G800 is shorter than that of the G700 and has two fewer windows on each side.

Range, speed, and city pairs

The Gulfstream G800 has a range of 8,000 nautical miles or 14,816 kilometers. It will be the longest-range aircraft in the industry, even surpassing the G700. The engines are Rolls-Royce Pearl 700 engines making the aircraft fast and fuel efficient and it has a top speed of Mach 0.925. At a cruise speed of Mach 0.85, the range is 7,000 nautical miles or 12,964 kilometers. The ceiling is a maximum of 51,000 feet.

At a cruise speed of Mach 0.90 and flying longer than 6,500 nautical miles, the G800 can save one and a half hours in comparison to other business jets in a similar class. Let’s explore the range further with some city pairs that could fly non-stop without the need to refuel:

  • Tokyo to London
  • London to Buenos Aires
  • Capetown to Sydney
  • Seattle to Hong Kong
  • New York to Capetown

Delays in certification

Deliveries were planned for 2023, but with delays in the certification process with the G700, it has been delayed until this year. The aircraft cost is a cool $72.5 million. The G800’s first flight took place on June 28, 2022, and FAA certification is hoped for this year. It is expected that the G800 will be a replacement for the ever-popular G550.

The G800 cabin

The elegant interior is designed for focused work or relaxation and sleep. It can seat up to 19 passengers and sleep ten, depending on the configuration. A configuration with a crew compartment would seat 15 passengers and sleep seven. There are two lavatories, a large galley and 3 to 4 living areas. There are 16 of Gulfstream’s signature oval panoramic windows that allow plenty of natural light in the cabin.

The G800 has a 100% fresh air system that is renewed every two to three minutes using its plasma-ionization clean air system. It has one of the quietest cabins in business aviation and offers a peaceful and comfortable environment, whether traveling for business or pleasure. The low cabin altitude of just less than 3,000 feet allows for the passengers and crew to arrive at their destination fresh and healthy.

In the cockpit

The G800 has the Gulfstream Symmetry avionics suite. There are active control sidesticks that improve non-verbal communication between the pilots through tactile cues. There are ten touchscreen displays that work in sync with Phase-of-Flight Intelligence and reduces the number of switches in the cockpit.

There is a predictive landing performance system that helps to prevent the possibility of runway overruns. Dual Head-Up Displays (HUD) feature the Combined Vision System (CVS) that combines the Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS) and the Synthetic Vision System (SVS) in just one image. This creates situational awareness among pilots and allows access to more airports that would not otherwise be available.
