Summary

  • Delta Air Lines is expanding its network in Austin, Texas, with a new in-state route.
  • Flights to Harlingen will be operated by SkyWest Airlines under the Delta Connection regional brand.
  • Delta will face competition from Southwest Airlines on the new route.

Delta Air Lines will be adding a new intra-Texas route from Austin–Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) this fall. The Atlanta-based carrier has scheduled flights to Valley International Airport (HRL) in Harlingen, Texas, on the Embraer E175.

The move is the latest in Delta’s push for growth at AUS and increases its network at the airport to 16 destinations. This summer, the airline has offered its largest-ever schedule at AUS, representing a 20% increase in seat capacity compared to last year.

Beginning in October

According to aviation data and analytics firm Cirium, Delta will commence the once-daily service on October 7th. The flights will be operated by regional carrier SkyWest Airlines under the Delta Connection brand. The flight, DL4085, will be treated as an HRL turn, meaning it will operate in both directions. The HRL-bound leg will depart just before 11:00 and will arrive around 12:15, while the return leg is scheduled to leave just 30 minutes later at 12:45 and arrive back at AUS just after 14:00.

Bon Appétit: Delta Air Lines Adds New Inflight Menu On Flights From Paris To The US During The Olympic Games

The airline has revealed its new summer menu, featuring chef-curated menus and special meals for the Olympic games.

About the E175

SkyWest operates two different configurations of the E175 – one model that seats 70 passengers and another that accommodates 76. The latter will be deployed to HRL, offering a total of 152 roundtrip daily seats. The cabin is configured into a two-class layout with 12 seats in first class and 64 seats in the main cabin. The Embraer E-jets family has been regarded as one of the most comfortable regional jets in the industry.

The first class seats are in a 1-2 configuration, each with a width of 20 inches and a pitch of 36 inches. The seats in the main cabin are in a 2-2 configuration. 20 seats are Delta Comfort+ seats, which have a width of 18.3 inches and a pitch of 34 inches. The 44 remaining standard main cabin seats have the same width but less pitch, ranging from 30-31 inches depending on where the seat is located.

The E175 is also equipped with WiFi, allowing passengers to surf the web and stay entertained. Connectivity is free for Delta SkyMiles members, while a small fee is required for non-members. Travelers can also keep their electronic devices charged thanks to in-seat USB ports and power outlets.

The third intra-Texas route

Delta has a total of 50 flights scheduled between AUS and HRL in October – 50 in each direction – offering 3,800 seats. In November, frequencies will be boosted to 60 total flights, offering 4,560 seats. The airline will face competition from Southwest Airlines, which also operates flights between AUS and HRL. Delta is, however, the only airline to fly between HRL and its hub at Minneapolis–St. Paul International Airport, but the service operates on a seasonal basis.

The new HRL service from AUS is Delta’s third route within Texas. SkyWest has existing E175 flights to Midland International Air and Space Port (MAF) and McAllen Miller International Airport (MFE). Earlier this month, SkyWest announced plans to open its 20th crew base at AUS. In addition to Delta Connection, the airline also operates flights for Alaska Airlines, and for American Eagle and United Express – the regional brands of American Airlines and United Airlines.

Once the HRL route begins, Delta will fly nonstop to a total of 16 destinations from AUS.
