Summary

  • Direct flights connecting Porto & North America give leisure & business travelers more options.
  • The weekly services serve to reduce travel time between Porto & iconic cities in the US & Canada.
  • Take advantage of the StopOver Azores program for longer trips with connections through the Azores Archipelago.

Direct connections from the United States and Canada and the city of Porto started with flights from Azores Airlines. First announced last year, the weekly services will connect Portugal’s second city with New York, Toronto, and, for the first time, Boston.

Nonstop options for Porto

The new direct flights from Azores Airlines bring Portugal’s North Region, particularly the city of Porto (OPO), closer to the iconic cities of Boston, New York, and Toronto. The route is expected to serve as a link between the regional business centers and promote onward connections.

All have daytime flights back to Europe.

The city of Porto is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its architecture and unique painted tiles; the nearby Douro Valley is where Port, a sweet and fortified wine, originated. Graça Silva, Director of Sales, Marketing, and Communication at SATA Group, noted there is also a significant demand for leisure and family travel:

“This direct air operation reinforces the offer of flights departing from Porto and North America, destinations to which Azores Airlines has been flying for more than two decades and where it has consistently grown.

“We believe that the city of Porto and the entire Northern Region have uniquely attractive arguments for the tourist segment, but equally important for the business and friends & relatives’ segments”

The flights are notable as they depart eastbound during the daytime and arrive in Europe late in the evening rather than the following morning. Simple Flying previously revealed that Boston and JFK are new destinations from Porto, with just under 20,000 roundtrip point-to-point passengers each in 2019.

The flights are scheduled to be operated by a Boeing 767 operated by EUROATLANTIC Airways, the company behind the carrier’s Madiera flights to North America. The airline currently operates an all-Airbus fleet, while its sister airline, under the SATA Group, SATA Air Açores, operates a turboprop fleet on intra-island routes.

Passengers looking to see multiple destinations can take advantage of StopOver Azores. The airline stopover program allows a stay of seven days in the Azores. As the carrier will continue to offer 24 weekly connections to the Azores Archipelago, passengers can take advantage of a direct flight in one direction and a stopover on the return leg, with connections (via Ponta Delgada), to Boston, New York, Cape Verde (Praia), Toronto, and Montreal.
