TAP Air Portugal has plans to mark five years of flights to three United States cities, namely Chicago, San Francisco, and Washington, DC. The Portuguese airline began services to the trio on three different days in June 2019.
Runway show in San Francisco
TAP Air Portugal detailed that it would host a runway show at San Franciso’s Aviation Museum, where the airline will display the cabin crew uniforms its flight attendants wore throughout the carrier’s 77-year history.

Ricardo Dinis, the country manager for UK, Ireland, and Nordics at TAP Air Portugal, said that at the same time as the airline was gearing up for a busy summer, it was proud to celebrate the five-year anniversaries of flights from Lisbon Airport (LIS) to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), San Francisco International Airport (SFO), and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD).
“To celebrate a trio of transatlantic anniversaries within the same month is an iconic moment in TAP’s history and reinforces our commitment to connecting Portugal to the world, and the world to Portugal.”

Stopover program
Dinis highlighted that these flights have been popular, and TAP Air Portugal is looking forward to welcoming even more customers on its flights to North America in the next five years and beyond. The Portuguese carrier detailed that it has five weekly flights to ORD, daily flights to SFO, and double-daily frequencies to IAD.
However, TAP Air Portugal also serves a host of other destinations in the US. Data from the aviation analytics company Cirium showed that the Portuguese airline has 78 weekly departures from Portugal to the US, serving seven destinations in total.

In its statement, TAP Air Portugal highlighted its Stopover program, which offers passengers the ability to stay in Lisbon or Porto for up to ten days at no extra charge. Furthermore, travelers can book a stopover when flying from and to Portugal, with TAP Air Portugal also offering a 25% discount on the second destination in Portugal.

Growing popularity of flights to Portugal
Throughout the past few years, the market between Portugal and the US has only grown, with airlines adding more flights and seats on flights on routes connecting the pair of countries, especially during the peak summer season.

Cirium data showed that in June 2019, there were 106 weekly departures from Portugal to the US, amounting to 136.4 million available seat kilometers (ASK). In June 2024, despite the setbacks of the pandemic, there have been 157 weekly departures on routes from Portugal to the US, amounting to 192.9 million ASKs.
