SAS is set to leave the Star Alliance at the end of August, joining SkyTeam on September 1st. For many, this will have little to no impact, but for SAS Eurobonus members who regularly fly with Star Alliance carriers, it means a loss of perks.

Thankfully,

Lufthansa

has thrown a life raft to affected

SAS

members, offering to keep their

Star Alliance

status and, hopefully, keep their custom. The German carrier is offering free Frequent Traveller status for all SAS Silver members and Senator status for SAS members who are Gold and higher. We did the status match, and here’s what we found.

The requirements

Unfortunately, Lufthansa’s status match is limited to SAS Eurobonus members, meaning that a basic requirement is having Silver status or higher. However, there are very few other restrictions to gaining status.

Miles & More Launches Status Match For SAS EuroBonus Members Looking To Retain Star Alliance Perks

The challenge comes ahead of SAS’ departure from Star Alliance.

The status match does not charge fees. Once successful, the status is granted until the end of February 2025. Lufthansa is also fairly generous in extending this status with a small challenge. Members completing the following challenges will see their status extended until February 2026,

  • Frequent Traveller – Two segments before November 30th, 2024
  • Senator – Six segments before November 30th, 2024

A fairly easy application

The Lufthansa

Miles & More

status match is administered by statusmatch.com, a website that I previously used for the Royal Jordanian status match. As I was familiar with the process, it took me a matter of minutes to complete.

For the status match, fairly few details are actually required. On the first step, potential matches are requested to provide their name, email address, Miles & More number, and country of residency.

After this, they need to confirm their status level with SAS and their membership number with Eurobonus. Finally, you need to upload proof of your SAS Gold status. In this case, I uploaded a photo of my physical membership card.

Now, sit back and wait

The timeline for the approval of the status match was fairly swift. I submitted my application at 16:30 CEST on Friday, June 7th, and it was approved at 00:05 on Saturday, June 8th. When I previously applied for the Royal Jordanian status match, I was required to prove my identity, though this was not required for the Lufthansa match.

Next, I needed a little patience. statusmatch.com advertised that once the status match is approved, it can take up to 10 working days for it to reflect in your account. When I applied for the Royal Jordanian match, it was quoted at 5 days, but in reality, it took less than 24 hours from application to reflection, leading me to believe that the Lufthansa match would be equally speedy.

This wasn’t the case. After patiently waiting seven working days, I discovered that my Miles and More account had been upgraded to a Senator account and that I had a new membership number. Anecdotal evidence from the FlyerTalk forum suggests that many other people also got the status updated in bulk.

Senator Card Redacted

Interestingly, as of the time of writing, I have not received any sort of welcome or confirmation email from Lufthansa or Miles and More about my new status. Additionally, the app and website do not reflect that I need just six Lufthansa segments to retain my status. However, I have a digital Senator card and have quickly added the new number to my upcoming Lufthansa bookings to register these segments.
