Virgin Atlantic is celebrating 40 years in the industry today with a special flight sale commemorating its first route from Gatwick to Newark. The airline’s package holiday arm, Virgin Atlantic Holidays, will also offer major savings on holiday packages for a limited time.

Virgin offers anniversary fare savings

Virgin Atlantic’s Ruby Anniversary falls today (June 22nd), marking 40 years since the British carrier’s inaugural flight from London Gatwick Airport (LGW) to Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR). The carrier’s first-ever flight was priced at £99 at the time, so it is launching a sale cutting fares starting at £99 depending on your cabin class.

Today, Virgin Atlantic has a fleet of 42 widebody aircraft at its disposal.

It will offer passengers up to £99 off return flights in Economy Classic and Delight on flights across its network departing from the UK. For those traveling in the airline’s Premium class, this will go up to £199 off return flights, while those flying in Upper Class can get up to £299 off the fare. To redeem the offer, all you need to do is enter the code “FORTY” during the booking process to apply the discount.

You can also get up to £200 off when booking a package through Virgin Atlantic Holidays using the promo code “BIRTHDAY”. This will apply a saving of £25 per person and will also knock another £100 off the price when spending over £3000. Be advised that the anniversary discounts are subject to limited availability and only available between 00:01 on Friday, June 21st, to 23:59 on Monday, June 24th, and are applicable to bookings during the travel period between June 24th and December 31st.

15 US destinations

Earlier this month, Virgin Atlantic launched (or re-launched, to be accurate) its 15th service to the US with the return of flights between Manchester and Las Vegas following a five-year hiatus. While it no longer operates out of London’s second airport, the airline now serves over 20 destinations out of its hub at London Heathrow Airport (LHR), the country’s busiest airport. It also flies to four US destinations out of Manchester Airport (MAN) in Atlanta, New York JFK, Las Vegas and Orlando.

Cirium data reveals the airline offers over 140,000 weekly seats across its network. The majority of capacity, approximately 78.5% to be exact, are on services between the UK and the US. The carrier is also set to return to Canada for the first time in over a decade next year, with a daily flight between London Heathrow and Toronto launching in March 2025.
