It is no secret that a career in the entertainment industry can earn you millions of dollars per year, with all the promotion deals, music sales, and tours. As such, many artists, actors, and celebrities live extravagant lives with luxury cars and million-dollar mansions. With all the traveling involved, several artists also invest in private jets to allow for more convenient travel when hoping in between cities.

Sometimes, with back-to-back concerts in different countries, it is almost impractical for celebrities to travel on commercial airlines and through public airports. The situation is no different for Canadian rapper Aubrey Drake Graham, better known as Drake. While most musicians own smaller private jets like Taylor Swift’s Dassault Falcon 900 or Falcon 7X, Drake travels in a private Boeing 767. However, Drake does not own the aircraft as it is part of a deal with a Canadian cargo company.

Drake’s private Boeing 767

Since the public first caught wind of the private B767, dubbed ‘Air Drake,’ it has been likened to a five-star hotel. While it does not fly to the most common airports, it can be easily spotted because of its unique sky blue and white livery designed by the late Louis Vuitton Creative Director Virgil Abloh. The tail section features the iconic owl logo of Drake’s company, October’s Very Own (OVO).

Air Drake’s interior features at least three private suites, two living rooms, a classy business lounge, an entertainment room, and a bathroom. You can find a king-size bed, fully carpeted floors, flat-screen TVs, velvet couches, top-quality furniture, and a shower in these spaces. The cabin is a mix of smooth gold and wood surfaces, with carpet and furniture taking on a beige or light purple color.

A 28-year-old aircraft

Drake’s private jet is a Boeing 767-200ER, registered as N767CJ. According to ch-aviation, it is almost 28 years old, having taken its first flight in September 1996. It was first delivered in October 1996 to Saudi Arabia’s Mid East Jet, which operated it until August 2018. It was formerly registered as N767KS.

Ch-aviation data shows that the registered owner is the Canadian company Cargojet Airways, which acquired the aircraft in April 2019. As of February 2020, N767CJ had posted 11,346 flight hours across 2,823 flight cycles. It can seat up to 45 passengers in an all-business configuration. However, a normal passenger 767-200ER could sit over 200 passengers in a one or two-class configuration. According to Cargojet, the B767-200ER freighters have the following specifications:

  • Maximum payload: 100,000 lbs (45,359 Kg)
  • Total volume: 15,468 cu ft
  • Range (max payload): 3,000 NM (5556 Km)
  • Cruise speed: Mach 0.80

The customization is reported to have cost Cargojet between 80 and 100 million dollars, giving the aircraft a total value of about $200 million. After receiving the jet in 2019, Drake flew it to The Turks and Caicos Islands for an exclusive holiday. Since then, it has been spotted at various airports worldwide.

A free airplane?

Indeed, the Canadian connection between the rapper and the airline is no coincidence. The aircraft is provided to Drake free of charge through a partnership with Cargojet. And what does Cargojet get out of this deal? Free publicity! Seeing that Drake shows off the plane, with the Cargojet brand on the side, on social media, in music videos, and on his website, the deal seems to be working.

As a big supporter of homegrown talent, Drake accepted the deal and has put his jet to good marketing use. In 2019, when the Toronto Raptors won the NBA Finals, the plane was spotted performing a victory lap around the singer-songwriter’s hometown. The players also got a chance to fly Air Drake after the match.

Other artists with private jets

Apart from Drake, many other celebrities enjoy flying on their own private jets, allowing them hassle-free international travel. One artist widely known for her private jet use is Taylor Swift. She flies around in a Dassault Falcon 7X but has recently come under scrutiny for her use of the private jet. Last week, the aircraft escaped damage as two climate activists vandalized planes at London Stansted Airport (STN).

Drake’s fellow rapper and record executive, William Leonard Roberts II, known professionally as Rick Ross, owns a Gulfstream G550. Although he claimed it was worth $5 billion, similar jets cost around $15-20 million. The American rapper purchased the jet in April 2023. It underwent a makeover by Duncan Aviation and now sports a custom black and gold livery with his name stylized as RICK RO$$.
