Air Canada is gearing up to increase capacity through widebody operations in the US this fall and winter. The airline is planning to send the Airbus A330-300 to Las Vegas and Phoenix, while the Boeing 777-200LR will be deployed to Miami.

Some US routes already see Air Canada’s widebodies regularly, but others typically see the adjustment only on a seasonal basis. The changes are set to occur in September and October, ahead of the busy holiday travel season.

Widebodies in Sin City

According to Ishrion Aviation, Air Canada updated its US widebody schedule on Thursday. Data from aviation analytics firm Cirium shows that beginning September 3rd, the airline will deploy the 787-8 Dreamliner from its hub at Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ) to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS) after a two-month hiatus. The aircraft will operate a total of 30 flights –15 in each direction – through September 17th. On the following day, the larger 787-9 will take over, operating a total of 26 flights – 13 each way.

787-9 operations between YYZ and LAS will continue in October with a total of 52 flights. Air Canada will also deploy the A330-300 on 10 flights during the month. In November, the 787-9 will be removed from the route, leaving the A330-300 as the only widebody operating between the two destinations. It will handle a total of 60 flights, while the A319 and A321 will cover the remainder of the frequencies. Interestingly, the 737 MAX 8 will replace the Airbus narrowbodies in December, but the A330-300 will remain and is scheduled to handle 62 flights. Air Canada is expected to continue widebody operations between YYZ and LAS through April 2025.

As the 787-8 finishes its LAS tenure on September 17th, Air Canada will begin to deploy it from YYZ to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). The aircraft is scheduled on 14 flights in each direction during the month before the 787-9 and A330-300 will be deployed in October. The widebodies will be accompanied by the A220-300, A319, and A321 throughout the two months.

However, all aircraft types will be removed from the route except for the A330-300 for November and December. The widebody will be the only operator between YYZ and PHX through February 2025.

777 in Miami

Beginning October 27th, Air Canada will deploy the 777-200LR from YYZ to Miami International Airport (MIA) four times weekly. The aircraft will serve the route through December 31st, but will not replace other aircraft on the route entirely, as the A320 and A321 are slated to continue operating between the two destinations.

Air Canada has 134 flights scheduled on the route in October. The 777-200LR will operate three flights each way, while the A320 will only handle one flight in each direction. The A321 is scheduled as the primary equipment between YYZ and MIA, operating 126 flights in total.

In November, the 777-200LR will handle 34 of the 180 flights on the route. With the increased frequencies, the A320 is scheduled on 14 flights, and the A321 will operate 132 flights. Air Canada has 219 flights scheduled on the route in December. The 777-200LR will handle 36 flights, while the A320 will have a portion of the share. The A321, again, will operate the overwhelming majority.
