ITA Airways, the flag carrier of Italy, is continuing to grow its route network with plans to connect Suvarnabhumi Airport (BKK) in Bangkok, Thailand, from its hub at Rome–Fiumicino Airport (FCO). The airline announced the news on Monday, noting that it is set to begin in November.

The service will be ITA’s first-ever flight between Italy and Thailand and “one of the highlights of the upcoming 2024/2025 Winter season.” The airline’s executives believe the route will benefit both business and leisure travelers.

ITA Airways’ Combined Plane & Train Tickets: Everything You Need To Know

This approach combines air routes with train trips, enlarging the current coverage of the ITA Airways destination network.

ITA’s Chief Commercial Officer and CEO of Volare, Emiliana Limosani, commented on the new nonstop service on Monday.

“Our new Rome – Bangkok connection represents an important step forward in ITA Airways’ development strategy as it adds another intercontinental destination and opens for our passengers the doors to Thailand, a strategic market in terms of leisure tourism and business segment.”

The route’s equipment

ITA will deploy its Airbus A330-900neos on the route. The aircraft, appropriately equipped for long-haul operations, accommodates 291 passengers in a three-class configuration. Business class has 30 luxurious Thompson Aero Vantage XL seats that convert into a fully flat horizontal bed. The seats also offer direct aisle access along with extensive space for work, relaxation, and personal stowage. Passengers can also take advantage of privacy as suite doors can fully enclose the seats.

Premium economy comprises 24 recliner seats offering eight inches of recline. According to aeroLOPA, the seats also have a winged-four-way adjustable hammock-style headrest and a retractable bi-folding tray table. Economy has 237 seats arranged in a 2-4-2 format. 36 economy seats are designated as Comfort Economy seats with increased legroom. Passengers in all classes can enjoy inflight entertainment through a 4K ultra-high-definition seatback touchscreen with Bluetooth audio capability.

“A key destination for business traffic”

The new route will undoubtedly boost tourism between both countries, but Limosani went on to explain how the flight will also benefit the business sector.

“Bangkok has always been one of the world’s top tourism capitals and an important hub, that allows to reach the most famous paradisiacal destinations in the world thanks to connecting flights with numerous Thai islands,” the executive stated. “At the same time, it is a key destination for business traffic between the two Countries, a sector in constant growth. The new direct flight also reflects ITA Airways’ commitment to providing optimal travel solutions confirming the importance of developing the intercontinental network in the Company’s commercial strategies.”

ITA’s growing route network currently comprises nearly 60 destinations – 16 domestic, 26 international, and 15 intercontinental. The new BKK service will launch just a few weeks after the airline will inaugurate flights between FCO and Dubai in late October. In August, flights to Jeddah are expected to begin, following the beginning of service to Dakar in July.

Earlier this year, ITA commenced service to Chicago and Toronto, while it launched flights to Riyadh and Accra last summer.
