The Lockheed C-141 Starlifer was a military transport aircraft developed by the Lockheed Corporation (now known as Lockheed Martin) primarily for use by the United States Air Force (USAF) and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). It was created to replace the older and slower aircraft being used by the military at the time.

One of the disadvantages of older aircraft was they had less cargo space and relied on propellers as a means of propulsion. One way the C-141 combated this was in its own design, where instead of propellers, the aircraft used 4 Pratt & Whitney TF33-P-7 turbofan engines, which each produced 21,000 Ibf of total thrust. The C-141 was designed by the Lockheed Corporation in 1960 and had its first flight on December 17th, 1963. With a successful production run from 1963-1968, the C-141 had a considerable impact on military operations and was the first jet-powered airlifter in the world.

Ceremonial First Pitch

On August 23, 1963, the first C-141 jet was rolled out of the Lockheed facility in Marietta, Georgia. Marietta is a suburb of Atlanta, GA, and is approximately 20.3 miles from the Atlanta city center. President John F. Kennedy gave a speech at the rollout ceremony of the C-141 from the White House’s Oval Office.

“If/we (today) have achieved a pause in the Cold War, if we succeeded in persuading our adversaries to reconsider their close of conflict, it is in large part the result of this build-up in our military readiness. The C-141A is an important part of the build-up — and I therefore take great pride in opening these plant doors at this time.” – President John F. Kennedy

Configurations that go A, B, C…

Lockheed, which merged with Martin Marietta in 1995 to form Lockheed Martin, responded to John F. Kennedy’s orders to develop additional jets for the United States military arsenal by producing the C-141 Starlifter. Lockheed Martin says that they “produced the StarLifter on time and under budget using the exclusive designs of its Marietta-based engineers.”

Lockheed made the C-141 in 3 configurations, including the C-141A, C-141B, and C-141C. Each configuration had changes that would help different missions depending on what was needed. The Air Mobility Command Museum says that the C-141A could carry up to 70,000 pounds of cargo or up to 154 troops at a time. The Air Mobility Command also mentions that with a full fuel tank, the aircraft could haul heavy loads for up to 4,000 miles before refueling. The Air Mobility Command further mentions that the C-141A was also used by NASA for Project Eclipse, which “demonstrated a reusable tow launch vehicle concept.”

Lockheed’s second version, the C-141B, provided corrective measures that were not foreseen when engineers first designed the C-141A. The C-141A had a lift capacity that was more than the cargo capacity onboard. To address this wasted lift, the fleet of C-141As was stretched, allowing room for more cargo. The Air Mobility Command Museum explains this in greater detail in their C-141B fact sheet.

“To correct the perceived deficiencies of the original model and utilize the C-141 to the fullest of its capabilities, the entire fleet of 270 in-service C-141As were stretched, adding needed payload volume. These modified aircraft were designated C-141B. Additional fuselage ‘plug’ sections were added before and after the wings, lengthening the fuselage by 23 ft 4 in (7.11 m) and allowing the carriage of 103 litters for wounded, 13 standard pallets, 205 troops, 168 paratroopers, or an equivalent increase in other loads. Furthermore, the ‘B’ configuration also had in-flight fueling which increased manageable routes for the United States Military.” – Air Mobility Command Museum

Lockheed’s last two configurations, the SOLL ll, and the C-141C, added additional modifications such as low-level night flying, navigational aids, and improved defenses. The C-141C also had some of the very first glass cockpit technology in any aircraft worldwide.

Rounding Third and Heading Home

The C-141 greatly supported the United States Air Force because it originated to meet the US government’s requirements for a fast and reliable workhorse that could decisively move large amounts of troops and cargo. One example of this happened on February 12, 1973, when the first American Prisoners of War were led to freedom. Called the “Hanoi Taxi,” the National Museum of the Air Force has said that the aircraft “flew two missions into Hanoi, carrying out 78 POWs and two civilian returnees to the Philippines, and four missions from the Philippines to the United States, carrying 76 ex-POWs.”

Over the remaining life of the aircraft, it flew an additional 40,000 flight hours and was later retired to the National Museum of the Air Force in 2006, where it is currently on display.

The C-141 had 43 years of heroic service and represented a massive leap in military cargo transport aircraft technologies that would lead to its successor in advanced warfare, the C-17 Globemaster lll.
