Getting a startup airline off the ground and operating well is no easy feat, and it often involves launching and closing routes to build a solid and profitable network. Closing services, particularly in regional destinations that are not well connected, is never easy, but for Avelo Airlines, closing services from Hollywood Burbank to Redding Regional Airport was beyond its control.

Cutting flights to Redding

In the US, California’s Redding Regional Airport (RDD) announced that effective August 26, 2024, Avelo Airlines will discontinue its airline services at the airport. The Avelo Airlines (Avelo) services between Los Angeles Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR) and Redding Regional were reportedly doing well, but the ground handler’s decision to quit California has thrown the proverbial spanner in the works.

The ground services provider is Trego Dugan Aviation, which provides support in ticketing, baggage handling and aircraft marshaling to and from the gate, but it has now made a business decision to leave California. An Avelo spokesperson said:

“We recently learned the business partner supporting Avelo’s airport operations at Redding Regional Airport will no longer be serving RDD. As a result, we’ve made the decision to cancel Avelo’s route between RDD and Los Angeles Hollywood Burbank Airport, effective August 26. This decision also enables us to better utilize our resources elsewhere in Avelo’s system.”

Gate to gate is just over an hour.

The airport said that while it has seen consistent growth in air service over the last few years, it remains among the smaller ones in California. Avelo will continue to serve other airports in California but had to make the hard decision for an airport that has maintained very high passenger loads for each Avelo flight during the airline’s time at the Redding Regional Airport. RDD Assistant Airports Manager Lauren Ford said:

“Avelo Airlines has been a solid partner in providing low-cost air service in and out of Redding Regional Airport. We remain hopeful that after the operational challenges are resolved, we can look for a return of Avelo service to Redding Regional Airport.”

Travelers from Northern California can still fly on United Airlines between Redding and the Los Angeles/Hollywood area through Los Angeles International (LAX). There is also service from RDD to and from Los Angeles and San Francisco through United Airlines and Seattle through Alaska Airlines.

10,000 flights in Los Angeles

On Tuesday, Avelo announced that since April 2021, it had flown 10,000 flights and carried more than 1.1 million passengers at Los Angeles’s best airport, Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR). Avelo Airlines Founder and CEO Andrew Levy said the airline is very excited to celebrate flying 10,000 flights between Los Angeles and its popular network of 14 West Coast destinations.

“The more than 1.1 million customers we’ve flown in and out of BUR since taking flight three years ago, is a testament to the convenience, affordability and reliability that distinguishes Avelo. Now is the perfect time for LA travelers to book their summer vacation or long weekend getaway.”
