The flag carrier of Jordan, Royal Jordanian Airlines, received its fourth Embraer E-Jet E2 on July 3, 2024, and immediately put it into revenue service. The brand-new aircraft has already made two international flights since it arrived in Amman yesterday.

No wasting time with the E2

According to data from Flightradar24, the new Embraer E190-E2, registration JY-RED, landed at Royal Jordanian’s base at Amman Queen Alia International Airport (AMM) on July 3 at 14:43 local time. By 18:34 on the same day, the aircraft was taking off for its first revenue flight to Greece.

The aircraft operated Flight RJ5131, departing Amman at 18:34 and arriving at Athens International Airport (ATH) at 20:38 local time. On the return leg, the E2 departed Athens at 22:00 and landed back in Amman at 23:44. Royal Jordanian operates a daily flight between the two destinations.

According to ch-aviation, the jet is owned by Florida-based aircraft lessor Azorra. It was ordered in January 2022 and took its first flight earlier this year prior to delivery to Royal Jordanian. It has 12 business and 80 economy class seats in a 2-2 configuration.

Royal Jordanian’s Embraer fleet

The Amman-based carrier currently has four Embraer E2s, including two E190s and two E195s. It also has three more E195-E2s and one E190-E2 still to be delivered. From the commitment of eight aircraft, six are from Azorra’s existing backlog with Embraer, while two are from the airline’s firm orders with the Brazilian manufacturer.

In January 2024, Royal Jordanian received its first two E195-E2s, registrations JY-REA and JY-REB, from Azorra. The delivery was celebrated with a ceremony at Embraer’s facility in São José dos Campos and an arrival celebration in Amman.

In May 2024, the Jordanian flag carrier received its first E190-E2, registered as JY-REC. The delivery of the aircraft marked a significant milestone for Embraer, as the manufacturer delivered the 1800th E-Jet production aircraft. The Azorra-owned jet was handed over to Royal Jordanian on May 2 in São José dos Campos.

Apart from the E2s, the Amman-based carrier also operates four first-generation E-Jets, including two E-170s and two E-190s. Data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, shows that Royal Jordanian flies its Embraer jets from Amman to over 20 destinations, including Aqaba, Bahrain, Barcelona, Cairo, Rome, and Istanbul. As of July 2024, Cairo is the top destination for its Embraer jets.

Since their entry into service in 2004, the E-Jets have been successful worldwide, operating with 90 airlines and leasing companies from over 60 countries. The E190-E2 is part of Embraer’s family of advanced-generation E-Jets, which feature new technology and are quieter and more fuel-efficient.

Royal Jordanian’s operations

Royal Jordanian now has a fleet of 30 aircraft with an average age of 11 years. This includes the Airbus A320 family, Boeing 787 Dreamliners, and Embraer E-Jets. The airline flies from Amman to one domestic and 48 international destinations in North Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, and the Middle East.

As a oneworld member, the airline’s customers can access nearly 1,000 destinations worldwide. The airline has been part of the alliance since 2007, together with Middle Eastern carrier, Qatar Airways. Muscat-based Oman Air is also set to join the alliance this year after being invited in 2022.
