This week, Mexico’s low-cost carrier, Viva Aerobus, launched services on its new routes from Miami International to Monterrey and Merida. The Airbus A321neo services to Monterey started on Monday, and on Tuesday, the first flights to Merida took off from Miami.

Two new services from MIA

On Monday, July 1, officials from Miami-Dade County and Mexican low-cost carrier (LCC) Viva Aerobus cut the ribbon to launch the first flights from Miami to Monterrey. The service started from Monterrey International Airport (MTY) when flight VB730 departed at 09:20 and, after a 2:55-hour flight, landed at Miami International Airport at 14:15.

Viva Aerobus Receives Airbus A321neo With New Airspace Cabin

The Mexican ultra-low-cost carrier now has a fleet composed of 79 aircraft.

The flight was operated with a 2020 Airbus A321neo, registration XA-VBH and MSN 10056, that departed Miami International as flight VB731 at 16:33 and arrived in Monterrey at 17:19. In the last week, the A321neo operated domestic flights to destinations including Mexico City, Tijuana, Cancun, Toluca and Oaxaca while also heading to Cincinnati Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG) in the US.

On Tuesday, Viva Aerobus flight VB754 departed Merida Rejon Airport (MID) at 11:36 and arrived at Miami International Airport at 15:14, after a 1:39-hour trip. The service was flown with a 2019 Airbus A320neo, registration XA-VIO and MSN 08894, that departed MIA at 17:31 and was back in Merida at 17:08. The A320neo then operated a return service to Puebla Hermanos Serdan International (PBC) and ended the day with a single sector to Monterrey.

Five flights weekly to Mexico

Viva Aerobus has three weekly flights every Monday, Wednesday and Friday from Miami International to Monterrey and two weekly flights every Tuesday and Saturday to Merida. The airline uses a mix of Airbus A320 and A321 single-aisle jets, configured with 186 and 240 seats, respectively. Mexico was MIA’s third-largest international market in 2023, responsible for nearly 1.6 million passengers last year.

Viva Aerobus joins American Airlines in offering weekly flights from Miami to Monterrey and Merida. It is the fourth low-cost carrier to launch passenger services at MIA in 2024, joining Condor Airlines, LEVEL, and Avelo Airlines. Viva Aerobus started operations in 2006 and is based in Monterrey. On Monday, CEO Juan Carlos Zuazua said the airline is excited to connect Miami to its hometown and the beautiful city of Merida on the Yucatan Peninsula.

“Miami is a key part of our major expansion strategy in the US, as these routes will allow passengers to fly non-stop and low-fares between these regions, plus allowing them to connect through our Monterrey and Merida hubs to over 30 key destinations in Mexico, including its biggest cities and most popular leisure destinations.”

The new route is the first of six new US routes in 2024.

According to Planespotters.net, Viva Aerobus has an all-Airbus fleet of 105 aircraft. The fleet includes 45 A320-200s, 22 A320neos, 10 A321-200s and 28 A321neos, with an average age of just 7.8 years.

Monterrey is in the state of Nuevo Leon and is considered Mexico’s business and industrial hub and important educational center. More than 4,100 foreign companies have established operations in the area, which is also home to prominent business groups and renowned universities.
