Summary

  • Airbus showcases A350F freighter mock-up with world’s largest main deck cargo door and 111-tonne payload capacity.
  • A350F promises unbeatable efficiency, lower fuel burn, and reduced CO2 emissions compared to competitors.
  • A350F offers more volume capacity than Boeing 777F and aims to challenge Boeing’s dominance in cargo market.

Airbus has put on display a life-like, state-of-the-art freighter mock-up to lure more customers to the next generation of freighter aircraft. This full-scale immersive installation is expected to entice more customers to order the variant, which will have the world’s largest main deck cargo door. The Airbus A350F, which has been adapted from the A350-1000, will have a range of up to 5,405 miles (8,700 kilometers / 4,700 nautical miles) and an incredible 111-tonne payload capacity.

Airbus will bring the latest generation of aircraft into the large freighter market with ‘unbeatable efficiency’ and less fuel burn. Its CO2 emissions are expected to be lower than those of its competition, improving overall economics for its operators.

The A350F will be easily integrated into airline fleets, with Airbus noting it is the only ‘future-proof choice’ for its operators. With more volume capacity than the Boeing 777F, the next-generation aircraft will have all the latest features and solidify its expected status as the most sustainable aircraft in the freighter market.

The next-generation freighter is slightly behind on orders compared to the 777-8F.

Similar volume to the 747

According to Airbus, the A350F has taken years of expertise and engineering to design the aircraft, drafting knowledge from the likes of the Beluga and A300-600F. The production of the A350F will be strategically planned to ensure a smooth launch and entry into commercial service before ramping up the overall output of the variant to fulfill the growing list of orders.

The A350F will have equal volume capacity as the Boeing 747-F, with five tonnes more payload capabilities than the 777F. This will ensure robust capabilities for a wide range of operators.

With the aim of challenging Boeing’s dominance in the cargo market, the A350F already has a list of different customers and has surpassed the historic miserable sales of its predecessor, the A330-200F. With over ten customers already lined up in February, Taiwanese carrier STARLUX signed on to order five A350F freighters alongside three additional A330neo (passenger) aircraft. The request from STARLUX has highlighted the carrier’s commitment to nurturing the cargo market since the airline was launched. It shows the advantages of Taiwan’s geographical location in the Asia-Pacific region. At the time, Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus EVP Sales, Commercial Aircraft, described the airline’s partnership with Airbus:

“We love working with STARLUX Airlines in building and strengthening its fleet. Operating both the latest generation Airbus single aisle and widebody aircraft brings the airline enormous benefits. It significantly reduces fuel consumption and carbon emission and offers unrivalled levels of technical commonality, benefits in maintenance and training. The A350F, the only new generation large freighter, will fit seamlessly into this all-Airbus fleet and enable STARLUX Airlines to compete effectively with the leading players in key cargo markets.”
