CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Charlotte Douglas International Airport is experiencing its busiest summer travel period on record at the midway point of the season. Following the Fourth of July holiday, CLT is moving forward with the next interval of its Terminal Lobby Expansion project with the temporary relocation of American Airlines ticket counters.

From Memorial Day through the Fourth of July, CLT surpassed last year’s numbers by 14%. The Fourth of July holiday witnessed approximately 925,000 arriving and departing passengers from July 2-7, a 7% increase over last year. Of those 925,000, over 153,000 were local passengers departing Charlotte, a 6% uptick from 2023. Passenger activity is forecasted to remain high through Labor Day, with a continued 13% increase in passengers over last year.

To facilitate Terminal Lobby Expansion efforts, from Tuesday, July 9, through Sunday, July 21, all American Airlines ticket counters east of Checkpoint C will temporarily relocate to continue construction of its new ticket counters that will enhance and improve the check-in process. During this 12-day period, some ticket counters will be relocated outside to Door 2 of the Departures level. American Airlines will provide four ticket counters and four kiosks in that area. Additional signage will be in place to facilitate navigation.

Passengers are strongly advised to arrive two and a half hours prior to their domestic flights and three and a half hours prior to international flights during this time. Additionally, American Airlines flyers are encouraged to utilize the kiosks outside of Door 2. Passengers not needing to check luggage are encouraged to check in for their flights at aa.com and proceed directly to the security checkpoints. To assist and guide passengers, the Airport and American Airlines will deploy extra staff in the lobby and curbside.

The Terminal Lobby Expansion is a six-year project that is scheduled to be complete in 2025. It is transforming the terminal, which was built in 1982 to accommodate 2.8 million travelers a year. In 2023, passenger traffic reached a record 53.4 million.
