Air Kerala has taken another step towards becoming a reality as the Ministry of Civil Aviation gave the NOC. The airline was conceived as part of the dream of the vast Malayali diaspora residing in foreign countries. Two Dubai-based businessmen are behind Air Kerala and want to make it easier for people to travel to and from Kerala. Notably, several people from Kerala work in Gulf countries.

The airline is aiming to start operations in the first half of 2025 with three ATR 72-600 aircraft. The airline will initially connect tier-2 and tier-3 cities as the approval right now is for domestic routes only. It has been allowed to operate scheduled commuter air transport services for three years. However, services will extend to Gulf countries once the airline has a minimum of 20 aircraft, Businessman Afi Ahmed, who is also the chairman of the domestic airline company Zettfly, said. Officials are trying to procure aircraft directly from manufacturers.

“The initial investment needed for our project is approximately Dh110 million. Once we start our international flights, we will bring job opportunities to the UAE. Dubai will be one of our first international destinations, ensuring affordable travel for all expats,” Ahmed told Khaleej Times.

Zettfly wants to solve the travel crises the Malayali diaspora faces and aims to find efficient solutions to the high airfares. Air Kerala is being looked at as a gift to the people of Kerala living in foreign countries. It is also expected to boost the tourism industry of the state.

Air Kerala will create several job opportunities for the people of the state. Aviation experts from Kerala are expected to fill in top positions, such as the CEO. At least 350 job opportunities are expected to be created in the state.
