Summary

  • NZRAF used C-130H to extract a patient from Antarctica in winter conditions – success in extreme weather.
  • US Air Force utilized C-130H Hercules to deliver aid to troubled locations like Haiti and Gaza.
  • US donated a C-130H Hercules to Botswana for humanitarian missions and emergency responses.

The C-130 Hercules family of transport aircraft is a mainstay of Western air forces (and other air forces that purchase US aircraft) around the world. A number of key features make the C-130 Hercules an incredibly popular workhorse for a broad range of cargo missions. The Hercules provide logistical support to military operations, but they are also used for humanitarian missions. Here are five examples of when the C-130H Hercules was used to support humanitarian efforts.

NZRAF Antarctic mission

Date:

June 2024

Air Force:

Royal New Zealand Air Force

Type:

medical extraction

One recent example of a dramatic rescue by Hercules involved a New Zealand Royal Air Force (NZRAF) C-130H undertaking a daring winter evacuation mission in Antarctica. The C-130H flew eight hours from Christchurch in New Zealand into the perpetual night of wintertime in Antarctica to evacuate an American citizen from the American McMurdo Base.

The mission was a success, with the patient being brought to New Zealand to receive the needed medical attention that was unavailable on the isolated base. New Zealand operates a fleet of five C-130H (these are planned to be replaced by five new C-1301-30s). The New Zealand Air Force stated, “Apart from flying in a combat environment, night flying missions to Antarctica in the middle of winter present the most challenging and dangerous of conditions.”

US aid in Haiti

Date:

April 2024 (statement date – aid deliveries ongoing)

Air Force:

US Air Force

Type:

Humanitarian aid deliveries

One of the great tragedies of 2024 is the collapse of the government and law and order in Haiti. The poverty-stricken Caribbean island nation is largely dominated by various gangs, while the areas of effective government control are limited. The US has been attempting to aid Haiti and address the unfolding humanitarian crisis (including through the Denton Program).

The US Southern Command released a statement that the Air Force is using C-130s to fly humanitarian aid to the Toussiant Loverture International Airport in the Haitian capital of Port-au-Prince. The shipment included over 22,000 lbs of medication donated by the non-governmental organizations MAP International and Lift Logistics to Hope for Haiti.

Date:

Type:

Humanitarian aid airdrops

Israel and Gaza have been prominent in the news since October 7 for a seemingly endless stream of tragic events. As with almost every war, as conflict rages, it is the civilians who get caught in the crossfire and suffer. In March 2024, Air and Space Forces Magazine reported that the US Air Force was using C-130J Super Hercules to airdrop humanitarian aid into Gaza.

The aid drops included over 38,000 ready-to-eat meals and were conducted alongside Royal Jordanian Air Force C-130s. The operation was carried out successfully, and since then, the US has built a pier in Gaza to facilitate the delivery of humanitarian aid to the many people in need there. Many other countries have also delivered aid to Gaza from the air (including France, Egypt, and the UAE).

Donation of Hercules to Botswana

The US donated an excess Hercules to Botswana so that it could be used in humanitarian, emergency, and other missions

Date:

June 2024

Air Force:

US Air Force

Type:

Donation of aircraft

Sometimes, the Hercules itself is the aid delivered to another country. In June 2024, the US donated a C-130H Hercules (worth $30 million) to the Southern African nation of Botswana (pop. 2.6 million). Botswana has long been an exemplary example in post-colonial Africa of a relatively prosperous and stable democracy that has escaped much of the misfortune that has plagued other countries on the continent.

The US Embassy in Botswana stated that Hercules will boast Botswana’s capabilities in defense, humanitarian, and emergency response missions – both in the country and in the Southern African region. The donation of the C-130H Hercules was made possible through the US Air Force Excess Defense Articles program.

(and Australia) enjoy close relationships with Papua New Guinea (PNG) and often aid the country in times of need. New Guinea recently experienced a significant earthquake (March 24, 2024) and suffered floods in the same area (East Sepik).

The Government of Papua New Guinea asked New Zealand to help transport around 30 tonnes of aid from the PNG capital of Port Moresby to outlying areas (regional infrastructure in PNG is rudimentary). In May 2024, the New Zealand Air Force responded by delivering humanitarian assistance and disaster relief supplies. An unknown number of New Zealand’s five Hercules took part in the aid missions.
