An inbound Hawaiian Airlines flight has overshot the Kahului Airport (OGG) runway on the Hawaiian Island of Maui. On Thursday, 11 July, HA29 arrived from Seattle Tacoma International Airport (SEA), where it is alleged that there was an issue with the aircraft breaks. The aircraft involved was an Airbus A321neo with registration N227HA.

There have been no reports of damage to the aircraft, and 173 passengers and six crew on the flight were unharmed. Once the aircraft was inspected at the end of the runway, it was towed to the gate some 30 minutes after arrival.

Initial data from the ADS-B (Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast) that AvHerald reported suggests that the aircraft touched down 2,000 feet (600 meters) past the runway threshold at approximately 120 knots over the ground, stopping 330 feet (100 meters) past the runway end. The aircraft remained at the end of the runway for around 30 minutes before being towed to the terminal, and the airport’s 02/20 runway remained closed briefly following the incident.

Aircraft N227HA

Data retrieved from Flighradar24 identified Hawaiian Airlines flight HA29 departed Seattle at 10:42, just behind its scheduled departure time of 10:30. Taking off from the mainland United States in a northerly direction, the flight quickly climbed to its cruising altitude of 35,000 feet and headed south-west towards the Hawaiian state. The flight operated without issue for five hours and 42 minutes across the Pacific before touching down on Maui at 13:24. Making up time en route, it arrived 16 minutes ahead of its scheduled arrival time of 13:40.

Upon arrival at Kahului and experiencing the runway overshoot, the aircraft was quickly removed from service and has remained on the apron at the airport since. Subsequently, the corresponding return service to Oakland was canceled (HA24 / HA47).

4.7 year old Airbus A321neo

Data from ch-Aviation, an online aviation database, identifies that N227HA, the aircraft operating the service, is a 4.7-year-old Airbus A321neo delivered to the brand new Hawaiian carrier. The aircraft held the Airbus French test registration F-WZMS and took its first flight on October 26, 2019. The aircraft was delivered to Hawaiian Airlines on November 1, 2019, with serial number 9223. It is powered by two Pratt & Whitney PW1133G engines.
