It appears to be the season for airline anniversaries and celebrations, and on Friday, Spirit Airlines (Spirit) joined the party, announcing its 25th anniversary of operations at Los Angeles International Airport. While there was probably a ceremonial cake involved somewhere on Friday, a more tangible marker for passengers was Spirit’s one-day offer of $25 one-way flights from the airport.
Spirit marks 25 years at LAX
After landing its first flight at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) in 1999, Spirit has grown its network from LAX to 25 nonstop destinations. In the last five years, the low-cost carrier has made more investments at LAX, most recently launching daily nonstop flights to Portland International (PDX) and Seattle-Tacoma International (SEA). Next month, services will begin to Boston Logan International (BOS).

In addition to the gifts, the Spirit Charitable Foundation marked the occasion with a $25,000 donation to TreePeople, a Los Angeles-based nonprofit organization. The funds will advance TreePeople’s support of sustainable urban ecosystems in the Greater Los Angeles area through education, volunteer community-based action, and advocacy.
Spirit President and Chief Executive Officer Ted Christie highlighted that community spirit on Friday when he said:
“We first landed at Los Angeles International Airport 25 years ago and are proud to have grown to be one of the largest low-fare airlines at LAX, thanks to the support of our guests and long-term partners at Los Angeles World Airports. We look forward to continue serving our Los Angeles guests with 40 nonstop flights a day to 25 destinations across the United States and investing in the local community through the Spirit Charitable Foundation.”

Spirit’s highest frequency route from LAX is Las Vegas, with 4-5 daily flights, followed by three flights daily to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW), Detroit (DTW), and Houston (IAH) and Chicago (ORD) with 2-3 daily services.
