Passengers aboard the Ryanair flight FR126, which experienced a 17-hour delay on July 11, could be entitled to compensation, among passengers from other flights from any airline who have experienced delays this summer.
Under EU rules, passengers are entitled to compensation for extensive delays. According to the Irish Aviation Authority, for all flights less than 1500kms (short haul), the delay must be greater than 2 hours. For European flights of more than 1500kms and all other flights of between 1500 – 3500kms (medium haul), the delay must be greater than 3 hours. For all non-Community flights of more than 3500kms (long haul), the delay must be greater than 4 hours.
If your flight is delayed by more than 5 hours (regardless of the length of the journey) and you decide not to travel, you are entitled to a full refund.
For those struggling to claim their compensation, Shaun’s Aviation on X has provided a step-by-step guide on what to do if airlines fail to provide satisfactory assistance:
-
Compensation Forms: Begin by filling out the Delay Compensation form from the airline.
-
Contact Customer Assistance: If both forms are unsuccessful, reach out to customer assistance team by phone or email.
-
Persist with Customer Service: Should you encounter repetitive cycles with no resolution, state your intention to escalate the matter to the Irish Aviation Authority (IAA), specifically their Air Passenger Rights division, which specializes in carrier-passenger disputes.
-
Allow Reasonable Time for Resolution: After notifying the airline of your intention to escalate, allow a reasonable period (approximately 1-6 weeks) for the airline to respond.
-
Lodge a Complaint with the IAA: If Ryanair fails to address your complaint, file a complaint with the IAA’s Air Passenger Rights body.
