Summary

  • While it is unclear why the aircraft was in Teruel, previously Emirates has sent an A380 to Teruel for wing repairs.
  • Since September 3rd, 2023, Emirates has sent six A380s to Teruel in total.
  • Emirates is undergoing a fleet transformation with the arrival of the Airbus A350 and cabin retrofit of Airbus A380s and Boeing 777-300ERs.

At the time of writing, an Emirates Airbus A380 is being ferried from Teruel in Spain to the airline’s home base in Dubai. What makes this flight all the more interesting is that Teruel is not an Emirates destination and that this is the aircraft’s first flight in nearly three months. This article dives deeper into the aircraft’s history and the overall changes happening at Emirates.

Back in the sky

While Emirates maintains a strong presence in Spain, operating 14 flights daily to both Madrid and Barcelona, along with further cargo operations, it is interesting to note that on Friday, May 3rd, an Emirates Airbus A380-800 was ferried to Spain’s Teruel Airport (TEV).

However, the aircraft has now returned to the skies after nearly three months on the ground, and data from FlightRadar24.com shows that at the time of writing, it is 41,000 feet over Egypt, being ferried back to the airline’s hub at Dubai International Airport (DXB).

The aircraft in question is A6-EOH, which entered service slightly over nine years ago and operates under flight code EK2518. Considering that TEV is mostly known for its aircraft storage and maintenance facilities, it is possible that Emirates sent its aircraft for some scheduled maintenance work. While the airline has state-of-the-art facilities at DXB and Dubai World Central (DWC), the airline also has strategic partners for providing maintenance support, such as the partnership with Lufthansa Technik for the airline’s A380s.

Not the first aircraft

A fine combing of the details reveals that A6-EOH is one of the six Airbus A380s to be sent to Teruel since September 2023. A post on X from December 2023 corroborated with data from FlightRadar24.com revealed that the first A380 to be sent to TEV was in September 2023, which stayed on the ground for nearly three months for wing repairs.

While the details of the maintenance actions taken on each aircraft remain unconfirmed, these are the following six A380s that Emirates has sent to Teruel:

Considering that Emirates (like any other airline) will have scheduled maintenance for every aircraft in its fleet, paired with the fact that the airline is currently performing the largest cabin retrofit program recorded in aviation history, it is no surprise that Emirates is sending some of its aircraft to partner MRO facilities for the maintenance of its aircraft.

Busy time at Emirates

The airline, well known for its world-class services and for operating the world’s largest fleet of A380s, is currently undergoing a fleet transformation, which will see the Airline receive its first Airbus A350-900 aircraft within a few months. This not only marks the entry of a new aircraft type into its fleet, but the aircraft will also be the first passenger Emirates receives in over 2 years.
