Hawaiian Airlines is planning to upgrade its service between Honolulu and Salt Lake City. The carrier will replace its Airbus A321neos on the route with its larger A330-200s on the route later this year.

The change will be for a limited time, boosting capacity between the two destinations during the holiday season. Hawaiian inaugurated nonstop service to Salt Lake City in May.

From narrowbody to widebody

According to independent blog Ishrion Aviation, the airline will deploy the A330-200 on December 15th. HA84 is scheduled to depart Daniel K. Hawaiian Airlines Stocks’ Tumble As DOJ Reportedly Seeks To Challenge Alaska Airlines Merger

It is believed the DOJ will block the merger.

The move will undoubtedly bolster capacity between HNL and SLC. Since beginning service on May 18th, Hawaiian has operated daily flights on the A321neo. The aircraft, which is “ideal for West Coast to Hawaii markets,” accommodates a total of 189 passengers in a two-class configuration. The Premium Cabin is outfitted with 16 leather recliner seats in a 2-2 layout. The seats have a width of 20 inches and a pitch of 39 inches. Economy class comprises the remaining 173 seats in a 3-3 format. They have a width of 17.5 inches, but the pitch ranges depending on the type of seat. 44 economy seats toward the front of the cabin are known as Extra Comfort seats, which have 35 inches of pitch. The standard economy seats have a pitch of 30 inches.

Upgrades in more ways than one

With the A321neo, Hawaiian has offered roughly 11,300-11,800 seats between HNL and SLC, depending on the month. It competes with Delta Air Lines, which operates a hub at SLC. The Atlanta-based carrier offers daily service on the route with its Boeing 767-300ERs.

Once Hawaiian introduces the A330-200 on the route, it will stiffen its competition with Delta in more ways than one. While the aircraft type has more seats than the 767-300ER, it also represents a major premium upgrade. Hawaiian’s A330-200s have a total of 278 seats onboard in a two-class format, while Delta’s 767-300ERs have between 211 and 226 seats.

First class on the A330-200 comprises 18 fully lie-flat seats, while the main cabin has the remaining 260 seats – 68 of which are Extra Comfort seats. The first class seats are arranged in a 2-2-2 configuration with a pitch of 45-46 inches. The main cabin seats are mainly in a 2-4-2 layout, although some rows have a 2-3-2 configuration toward the rear of the cabin. Extra Comfort seats have a pitch of 36 inches, while the standard seats have 31 inches of pitch.

Thanks to the arrival of the 787-9 Dreamliner?

The A330-200 also has personal seatback screens at every seat, which the A321neo does not have, meaning it is an upgrade for all passengers onboard. However, WiFi is not yet equipped on the A330-200s, whereas the newer A321neos feature inflight connectivity. Hawaiian reportedly plans to equip its A330-200s and brand new 787-9 Dreamliners with WiFi in the coming months.

Earlier this year, the airline introduced the 787-9 on flights between HNL and San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX). So far, the carrier has two 787-9s with 10 more on order. The new planes likely influenced Hawaiian’s decision to deploy the A330-200 to SLC.
