Grant enables another project to attract additional commercial airlines to the area

TEXARKANA, Ark. (KSLA) – The Jim E. Yates terminal building at Texarkana Regional Airport has been up and running for two months now, but work at the site continues.

On Monday (Aug. 12), airport leaders announced they’re in line to receive $2,184,499 from the Airport Improvement Program administered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). Airport Director Paul Mehrlich said the funds will allow them to expand the terminal apron, which, in turn, will allow aircraft to be diverted to Texarkana during inclement weather or other emergencies.

“When we designed the apron, we made it so there would be two entrances and would be large enough to have some larger aircrafts on there. And due to the cost, we ended up breaking that cost into three phases. This will be the phase two,” Mehrlich explained.

Mehrlich said this will be another project to attract additional commercial airlines to the area.
