On the night of September 4, 2024, a Merlin Mk4 helicopter participating in a training exercise with the British aircraft carrier HMS Queen Elizabeth tragically crashed into the sea, resulting in the death of one crew member. The crash took place in the English Channel near Dorset during a night flying drill.

The Royal Navy confirmed the death of one of the three crew members aboard the Merlin Mk4 helicopter. The body of the deceased has not yet been recovered. The two other occupants were rescued from the water and are treated in a hospital. They did not suffer any serious injuries.

“It is with great sadness that we must report a member of the Royal Navy has died following a training incident last night,” the Royal Navy said in a statement. “A full investigation will take place.”
