American Airlines

(AA) falls in the

list of airlines operating the most flights with the Boeing 777

in 2024, with the carrier recently

announcing that it would add new European routes this year

. Some of these include flying from

Charlotte Douglas International Airport

(CLT) to Athens International Airport (ATH) and from Miami International Airport (MIA) to Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) on the Boeing 777-200ER.

According to data from planespotters.net, the US flag carrier currently has 67 Boeing 777 family aircraft. Three are parked, and the remaining are in service. These aircraft fly to domestic destinations as well as to continents such as Asia, Europe, and South America. In this article, we will look at the most frequently served routes of American Airlines’ Triple Sevens.

A brief outlook on AA’s operations using the Triple Sevens

According to data from Cirium, an aviation analytics company, for the month of September, American Airlines operates six routes using the Boeing 777s that it operates more than once daily. Curiously, five of these routes have something in common – they take you to (or take you from) the busiest airport in the UK-

London Heathrow Airport

(LHR).

The US airport nearest to London has the lowest ASMs on AA’s operations to and from Heathrow. All of the routes we are going to discuss are over 3,000 miles long and less than 5,500 miles. American Airlines offers you close to three hundred seats on some of these routes. Let’s take a look at them in some detail.

AA’s sole route that doesn’t involve LHR

American Airlines offers 273 seats per departure on its operations from

Miami International Airport

(MIA) to Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE) in Buenos Aires. Tied with the operations of AA between CLT and LHR, this is the lowest seats per departure offered on the routes we are discussing.

American Airlines is offering only 32 flights from MIA to EZE and 33 from EZE to MIA. Either way, AA has more than 38 million ASMs on this 4,405-mile route. The carrier competes only with the flag carrier of Argentina,

Aerolíneas Argentinas

(AR), for flights between MIA and EZE.

Let’s compare the details of the operations of each of these carriers:

  • While AA deploys its Boeing 777-200 as well as Boeing 777-200ERs, AR operates its

    Airbus A330

    s.

  • According to data from flightroutes.com, both these carriers have an identical flight time of nine hours in their operations from MIA to EZE. From EZE to MIA, their flight durations are approximately 20 minutes longer.

Flightroutes.com also says that neither of the two carriers offers one-stop connecting flights on this route.

Diving deeper into the AA’s operations to and from London Heathrow

The shortest routes of AA’s Boeing 777s to (and from) LHR involve the

New York John F. Kennedy International Airport

. AA offers more than 119 million ASMs on this route. Let’s break down the numbers further.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport

(DFW) to

London Heathrow Airport

. The airline gives 295 seats per departure from LHR to DFW and 294.7 seats per departure from DFW to LHR.

According to flightconnections.com, British Airways (BA) is the only competitor of AA for direct flights between LHR and DFW. BA operates this route using its

Airbus A380-800

s while AA uses its Boeing 777-200s and Boeing 777-200ERs.

A few updates on AA’s operations to/from Heathrow on its 777s

Only a couple of months ago, we learned that

AA would drop the expected 21 daily departures

to LHR in the winter to 19. The carrier even released a statement saying:

“As part of the continuous evaluation of our network, American will adjust service from London. Together with our partner British Airways, we will continue to operate service from more than 25 destinations across the United States to Heathrow. We’re proactively reaching out to impacted customers to offer alternate travel arrangements.”

The

carrier also added flights

from

Harry Reid International Airport

in Sin City to across the pond for the Consumer Electronics Show (CES), 2025.
