SAN ANTONIO (KTSA News) — There were several terminal lease agreements signed between airlines and the City of San Antonio Thursday.
But, there was one major holdout.
Dallas based Southwest Airlines says they were promised the largest terminal at San Antonio International Airport once the new Terminal C expansion project is completed.
A Southwest spokesperson tells KSAT-12 they were told they would get 10 gates total, but that deal changed a few months ago and now they won’t be getting the space they need to grow.
The city instead offered enhancements to the 6 gates Southwest currently has.
As a result, Southwest backed out of their lease extension agreement, saying the $200 million in enhancements is an “insignificant number of the enhancements needed.”
Southwest says about half of the traffic at San Antonio International will be theirs in coming years and they need the space. They currently claim 40% of the market share, or about 3.7 million travelers annually at the airport.
Both Southwest and airport officials say they will continue to work toward a solution.
