Last Friday, twenty passengers boarded an AirAsia A320 in Hong Kong and had no idea where they would end their journey. The group was absolutely clueless about their destination and only discovered where they were going at 30,000 feet, somewhere between Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur.
A very exciting outcome for travelers
In August, AirAsia and CLS Holiday announced the ‘No Clue Escape,’ inviting guests to pay HK$4,888 ($634) and sign up for a surprise trip without revealing the actual destination. This leap of faith was no hard sell, as the limited package was immediately snapped up in days, which is a great example of how keen Hong Kongers are to embrace the unknown and chase new adventures.

AirAsia created some fun of its own with special surprise boxes and unique souvenirs, and the destination was finally revealed in a signature AirAsia fun event. With the Airbus A320 at 30,000 feet, this group of clueless travelers learned they had made an excellent decision when they discovered they were headed to Male in the Maldives via a short stopover in Kuala Lumpur.

The happiness level onboard AirAsia flight AK139 between Hong Kong (HKG) and Kuala Lumpur International (KUL) would have been off the scale when the secret was revealed. The group is now spending five days in the Maldives, staying at Bandos Maldives, doing all manner of touristy things or just soaking up the sun and relaxing in this island paradise.

The ‘No Clue Escape’ tour is a unique promotion by AirAsia and CLS Holiday that aims to grow Hong Kong travelers’ awareness of AirAsia and its vast network across Asia and the Pacific. The goal is to encourage travelers to embrace flying and explore various new or favored destinations at an affordable price through convenient transfers.
The world’s first low-cost carrier network
Hong Kong is connected to AirAsia’s main hubs of Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Manila and (soon) Jakarta, from which passengers can further connect to destinations across Asia, Australia and Africa. AirAsia Head of Marketing for Greater China Terence So said the airline is thrilled to know that the event has been well received by holidaymakers and has captured everyone’s attention.

He added that it aligns perfectly with AirAsia’s brand spirit of ‘Small Win, Big Happiness,’ and invited guests to explore more of Asia, Southeast Asia and beyond, with access to 130 destinations.
“We hope everyone enjoys this trip, and we look forward to bringing more exciting offers to travelers in the Hong Kong market.”
In February this year, Tony Fernandes, the public face and co-founder of AirAsia, unveiled his plans to create the world’s first low-cost carrier network. That thinking is seen in the strategy behind the ‘No Clue Escape,’ as this event highlights the power of AirAsia’s affordable and seamless connections across continents, now stretching across Asia and Australia and, from November, expanding to Africa.
The service from Hong Kong to the Maldives via the Kuala Lumpur hub is a perfect example of the strategy, which the airline denotes as a FlyThru service. It is virtually a codeshare with itself as it conveniently connects passengers from one AirAsia flight to another without the bother of collecting bags or re-checking in, such as when flights from Melbourne to Nairobi in Kenya happen with a FlyThru service via the Kuala Lumpur hub.
