Airline schedules showed that in October, American Airlines
will have a dominant position in the aviation market in Texas
, with the airline scheduling 41.5% of the total arrivals from the state.

American Airlines’ prominence in Texas

Data from the aviation analytics company Cirium showed that out of the total 18,255 scheduled weekly flights from Texas, the US, American Airlines has scheduled 7,593 weekly departures, or 41.5%, in October.

United Airlines
and Southwest Airlines were the second and third-largest airlines in the state, with 4,166 (22.8%) and 3,908 (21.4%) scheduled departures, respectively.

One thing to note about United Airlines and Southwest Airlines schedules is that despite a relatively small difference in weekly departures from Texas in October, Southwest Airlines
will have significantly more weekly seats than United Airlines, 614,460 versus 509,829.

That comes down to the fact that out of United Airlines’ marketed weekly departures during the month, 1,777, or 42.6%, will be operated by the carrier’s regional partners, including Mesa Airlines
, CommuteAir, SkyWest Airlines, and Republic Airways.

In contrast, Southwest Airlines has scheduled all of its flights out of Texas with the Boeing
737-700, 737-800, and 737 MAX 8
, with an average weekly seat per departure being 157.2.

United Airlines weekly flights out of Texas average 122.4 seats. American Airlines aircraft flying out of Texas averaged 133.6 seats per weekly departure. However, due to the sheer volume difference between the three, American Airlines has over 1 million weekly seats from Texas in October.

The fourth-largest airline in the state in October should be Delta Air Lines, which has scheduled 988 weekly departures from the state, averaging 139.5 seats per flight from The Lone Star State.

Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) mirroring AA’s dominance

Similarly to airlines, Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport
(DFW) was the hands-down dominant airport in Texas, being responsible for 7,282 departures out of the state. Out of the total 18,255 weekly flights leaving Texas, this should represent a 39.8% market share among airports.

Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport
(IAH) was the second (4,040 weekly departures, or 22.1%), while Austin-Bergstrom International Airport (AUS) was the third, with 1,786 weekly flights from Texas, or 9.7% of the total weekly departures from the state.

There are few surprises here, considering that American Airlines and United Airlines operate large networks out of Dallas Fort Worth and Houston airports.

For example, American Airlines has scheduled 6,122 weekly departures out of its hub in Dallas, Texas, or 84% of the airport’s total weekly flights in October.

Two other major airports in the state included Dallas Love Field (DAL) and Houston William P. Hobby Airport (HOU), with 1,403 (7.6% of total weekly departures out of Texas) and 1,181 (6.4%) weekly flights leaving Texas, respectively.

The two latter airports are dominated by Southwest Airlines, which has scheduled 1,355 weekly departures from Love Field and 1,079 flights from Hobby Airport in October.

Top Texan routes

However, surprisingly, the most popular route from Texas is to another airport within the state. There are 156 weekly departures from Dallas Fort Worth to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), with flights being operated by American Airlines (69 weekly flights), United Airlines (62), Spirit Airlines (14), and Frontier Airlines (11).

Connections from Dallas Fort Worth to Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), and Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) were the other four most popular routes scheduled to depart Texas in October.

The itinerary between Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Mexico City International Airport (MEX) was the busiest international route from Texas, with a total of 66 weekly departures being scheduled by Aeromexico, United Airlines, Viva Aerobus, and Volaris.
