Denver International Airport
(DEN) opened its more recent gate expansion area on Concourse A in collaboration with budget airline Frontier Airlines, which was unveiled earlier this month. The 120,000-square-foot project was completed within budget and on time.
The project
Construction on the $220 million project began in the summer of 2022. It added 37,000 square feet of new concourse space and renovated an additional 83,000 square feet of existing space. It also includes a new ground boarding facility at the eastern edge of the concourse.

According to the Denver Gazette, Phil Washington, Chief Executive Officer of Denver Airport, had this to say about the project:
“Completing the Concourse A-East expansion project marks a major milestone in our effort to serve 100 million annual passengers within the next several years. I’m proud of everyone at DEN who ensured this project was completed on time and within budget, while maintaining a clear commitment to airport growth to meet our tremendous demand.”
Two parallel corridors (north and south) provide passengers access to five new gates, six new waiting areas, and nine remodeled gates, bringing the total to 14 gates. Partial operations began in the north corridor with Frontier Airlines in February this year, and the entire area was opened to the public on October 1st. The expansion also includes office space and an 8,000-square-foot maintenance facility for Frontier.
Alex Clerc, Senior Vice President of Customers for Frontier Airlines
, spoke about the expansion:
“We are very excited about the expansion on Concourse A and look forward to providing a great experience for our customers, along with increased operational efficiencies, in conjunction with the new facility.”
The new area includes plenty of passenger amenities, such as family restrooms, companion care rooms, a nursing room, a pet relief area, and charging stations. Travelers also have more dining and shopping options. The following stores are currently operational: Brother’s BBQ, Breckenridge Brewery, CNBC shop, and Snarf’s Sandwiches. More dining and retail outlets are expected to arrive in the new year.
Passengers can visit the Concourse A-East expansion using the escalators near gate A53. The new north and south corridors lead to gates A54-A84.
DEN gate expansion program
The project is part of the $2.5 billion Gate Expansion project that began in 2018. It is set to add 39 new gates to the airport and increase its overall capacity by 30%. The project includes constructing new commuter facilities, airline support spaces, gate modifications, and technology upgrades.

The airport has completed construction on the following expansions: B-West in November 2020, C-East in May 2022, B-East in October 2022, and A-West in November 2022.
In the last 28 years, DEN has grown from 33.1 million annual passengers to 77.8 million passengers, an increase of 230%. The airport is designed for 50 million passengers. As a result, expansions have to be made to accommodate new passenger numbers and future growth.
The expansions will allow the airline to host more airlines and international carriers, further increasing growth rates.
