United Airlines
has stood out among US airline stocks this year, with shares up more than 80% since January, far outperforming its nearest competitor, Delta Air Lines
. The Chicago-based carrier, approaching its centenary, is using its position as the world’s largest airline by capacity to pursue an aggressive development plan.

Premium service strategy drives growth

“We’re seeing unprofitable capacity begin to exit the market, leading to the expected domestic yield improvement,” CEO Scott Kirby told analysts on October 16th on the company’s earnings call, according to financial news website Investopedia.

United’s expansion is centered on emphasizing network expansion and premium services. The carrier is planning flights to eight new destinations like Mongolia, Greenland, and northern Spain next year.

Patrick Quayle, United’s senior vice president of global network planning and alliances, highlighted the airline’s successful dual strategy of competing with low-cost carriers while improving premium products to meet foreign competition. Because of this strategy, United has the US carrier’s largest international route network.

“We’ve been able to offer more seats at more price points, and that has allowed us to compete with the low-cost carriers in a price-effective way for the basic economy traveler,” said Quayle. “But it also allows us to compete with the foreign flag carriers by offering a better product in the front of the cabin.”

Fleet modernization enhances customer experience

United is now ranked third or fourth domestically, but United’s Chief Commercial Officer Andrew Nocella recognizes that even while the airline dominates worldwide, there is still room for development in its domestic market share.
