Indian media have reported that a 25-year-old man has been arrested following widespread fake bomb threats targeting airlines in India.
The Hindustan Times reported on Saturday, October 26 that “a 25-year-old unemployed man named Shubham Upadhyay” was arrested on charges of sending false bomb threats to several airlines.
According to security sources quoted by this media outlet, “he wanted to draw attention to himself and sent these messages as a joke. The matter is currently under investigation.”
Bomb threats in India began on October 14, causing widespread chaos within the country’s airlines.
The fake nature of these threats was quickly revealed, but several Indian passenger planes in Canada and Germany were forced to make emergency landings, and in some cases, passenger planes were escorted by fighter jets.
According to the Hindustan Times, over 275 flights were threatened with bomb attacks from October 14 to October 26.
Last week, Mumbai police also arrested a 17-year-old in connection with these threats.
In response to these threats, the Indian government stated that “such malicious acts, in the form of fake bomb threats to airlines, pose a potential threat to public order and national security.”
The recent surge in fake bomb threats in India has not only disrupted aviation services but has also highlighted the serious consequences of such hoaxes on public safety and national security.
The arrests indicate a firm stance by law enforcement to curb such disruptive actions and ensure the safety and security of the aviation industry.
