A woman has escaped paying extra baggage fees with a simple airport hack that costs just £1.55. Travelling can be expensive, with numerous holidaymakers trying to snag a deal before taking off.
However, nothing is more frustrating than reaching the airport once, grabbing a bargain holiday and being hit with a hefty charge at check-in because your luggage doesn’t fit under your seat.
According to the Independent, airport fees on domestic flights can cost around £15 to £25 for excess baggage up to 32kg and then double for anything that weighs more. Excess weight and oversized bags on international flights are £76, or £152 if over 32kg.
Travel TikTok creator Ms Garn|Travel has shared a major hack with her 325,000 followers online to avoid these fees. She stated: “Do not pay extra baggage fees. Here’s an airport secret they don’t want you to know. You can get additional luggage for £1.55.
“Let me show you how. If you’re like me and decide to catch a super cheap flight that only comes with your personal bag. Then this is the hack that you need!”
The video went on to follow the woman throughout the airport, explaining her secret mission. She said: “Today, I have decided to bring a bag bigger than the requirements, and I know it.”
Heading through duty-free, the woman says you should not exit just yet. She continued: “First thing you’re going to do is grab yourself one of these.” She grabbed a water bottle that cost £1.45 and then a duty-free airport bag.
The woman explained: “You purchase the cheapest item in duty-free, which is currently this water for £1.45 and grab yourself a bag for 10p. Fill this bag up with all your extra luggage and it’s time to board your flight. And yes this hack is legal.
“One shopping bag extra is free. And there you have it. This is how you get extra luggage on low-cost airlines for only £1.55.”
According to Stansted Airport, all airlines allow you to take one airport shopping bag on board along with your hand luggage.
Speaking to the BBC, Ryanair also concurred: “Ryanair’s one-bag carry-on luggage policy does not prevent or prohibit passengers purchasing airport shopping, but this shopping must fit inside the one generous piece of carry-on luggage within Ryanair’s dimensions.”
Taking to the creator’s comments, one person revealed this hack works and said: “I do this all the time, I feel if everyone starts doing this they’re going to start checking.” Another added: “I’ve been doing this for a long time. I save the bag and reuse it.”
Someone else offered a new hack and shared: “The other hack is to pre-order your toiletries at Boots online and get them delivered to the airport, you get a bag and full-sized products at high street prices.”
