After watching her mother’s Tyler Junior College Apache Ladies take an 83-76 win over Temple, Senoj Jones filled up the stat sheet as the Tyler Legacy Red Raiders picked up a 61-41 victory over Airline High School out of Bossier City, Louisiana, in the Herb Richardson Classic Saturday night at Wagstaff Gymnasium.
Jones, the New Mexico State commit and daughter of TJC head women’s basketball coach Trenia Tillis Hoard, finished with 12 points, seven rebounds, four assists, two steals and two blocks.
Two sophomores also had big games for the Lady Raiders as Holland Pine had 13 points, four steals, three rebounds and three assists, and Zareya Ceasar had 12 points and six rebounds.
Airline scored first as Addison McDowell drove to the basket before Legacy went on a 13-0 run. The Lady Raiders led 19-4 after the first quarter. Airline outscored Legacy 16-15 in the second quarter as Nia Williams connected on a 3-pointer and was fouled just before the buzzer. She missed the free throw, and the Lady Raiders led 34-20 at the break.
At the end of the third quarter, it was Madison Farmer connecting from downtown to give the Lady Raiders a 43-30 lead heading into the final quarter.
McDowell and Williams both made threes as part of a 10-2 Airline run to cut the score to 45-40 with 4:56 to play. The Lady Raiders then got a putback from Jones nine seconds later as they held Airline without a field goal the rest of the way, outscoring the Lady Vikings 16-1 in the final 4:47.
McDowell finished with 22 points. Williams had 12 points for Airline. KeZyriah Sykes had 6 points and 11 rebounds.
Other scorers for Legacy were DeCaila Bailey 6; Farmer 5; Shanaya Shaw 4; Grace Mills 3; and Nichole Baldwin 2. Mills added four assists and five steals, and Jackson had four steals.
Legacy (3-0) will host Garland at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday.
