On Monday, gunfire struck a Spirit Airlines flight en route to Haiti, injuring a flight attendant. The flight from Fort Lauderdale to Port-au-Prince was diverted to the Dominican Republic, where an inspection revealed damage consistent with gunfire. Spirit confirmed that the flight attendant sustained minor injuries, but no passengers were hurt.
In response, Spirit has suspended all flights to Haiti for further evaluation and temporarily grounded the affected plane. Arrangements are being made to return both crew and passengers to Florida.
American Airlines also announced it is halting its Miami-Port-au-Prince flights, while JetBlue warned of possible disruptions due to ongoing civil unrest in Haiti. The airline is waiving cancellation fees for affected travelers.
The U.S. State Department issued a warning, citing gang-led efforts to disrupt travel to Haiti and noting a temporary halt in airport operations in Port-au-Prince.
