Shortened version of MC-21 airliner to seat up to 160-170 passengers

MOSCOW. Nov 12 (Interfax) – The shortened version of the MC-21 passenger airliner, the MC-21-210 will seat up to about 160-170 passengers, the head of Russian state corporation Rostec, Sergei Chemezov told Interfax.

“Based on the size, it will accommodate up to about 160-170 passengers. It’s premature to give exact figures because development is at the initial stage,” Chemezov said.

The MC-21 family of airliners is being developed by PJSC Yakovlev , a division of the United Aircraft Corporation (UAC) , which in turn is part of Rostec. The base version of the plane is the MC-21-310, which is expected to seat up to 211 passengers, have a maximum range of 5,100 km and maximum takeoff weight of 85 tonnes.

Serial production of the MC-21-310, according to the latest official information, is scheduled to begin in 2025 after being postponed several times. The liner was initially being developed with international cooperation, but after the imposition of sanctions against Russia foreign partners pulled out of the project, which forced Russia to accelerate import substitution of systems and components.

First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov said earlier that a shortened version of the MC-21 might also be developed, with the plane shortened by one fuselage section. This version of the plane would have the same range with the weight characteristics obtained after import substitution, he said.

The development of the detailed design for the MC-21-210 will cost the government 1.94 billion rubles in 2024-2025, according to a draft government resolution published earlier by the Industry and Trade Ministry.
