New Delhi: Britain has imposed sanctions against Iran’s national airline and the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines (IRISL) on Monday 18 November. Britain said that these restrictions have been imposed in response to Iran’s delivery of ballistic missiles to Russia. Britain has accused Iran Air and IRISL of arming Russia for the Ukraine war.

Britain has also said that the assets of these companies will be seized. These sanctions have been imposed due to their alleged role so that any kind of cooperation with Russia can be stopped. Britain has done all this to put pressure on Iran. Missile and UAV (drone) technology has been banned.

The European Union has banned the export, transfer, supply, and sale of components that could be used in the manufacturing of missiles and drones.

Deal restrictions on ports and services

Access to Iranian ports in the Caspian Sea such as Amirabad and Anzali has been restricted. Iranian individuals and entities have been banned from providing services to their ships. At the same time, the British government has frozen all assets of Iran Air and IRISL in the UK. IRISL has been sanctioned for helping the war in Ukraine by delivering weapons to Russia.

Tehran’s response to sanctions

Iran dismissed the sanctions as “wrong and unfair”. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said freedom of navigation was a fundamental principle of maritime law. At the same time, Iran claimed that it is not involved in supplying any weapons for the Russia-Ukraine war. Though the sanctions will affect Iran’s shipping industry and oil production. Despite these sanctions, Iran has been able to increase its oil production to 3.4 million barrels per day.

The new sanctions imposed on Iran are not just part of political pressure. The move is aimed at curbing the Russia-Ukraine war and activities that affect global stability. However, Iran sees these sanctions as illegal and a conspiracy to increase economic pressure.
