Frontier Airlines
has announced 16 new routes, all of which will begin in February 2025 and March 2025, with seven of the new routes going in and out of Florida.

New routes at 21 airports

According to a statement by the low-cost carrier, it will launch 16 new routes across 21 airports starting in February 2025 or March 2025.

Frontier Airlines pointed out that these new routes will offer ultra-low-cost options to top destinations across the United States and the Caribbean, with the airline even offering one intra-Caribbean route, connecting Antigua V. C. Bird International Airport (ANU) with San Juan Luis Munoz Marin International Airport (SJU).

However, the route connecting the two islands was still subject to government approval, with the once-per-week itinerary being scheduled to start in February 2025.

Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
(AUS) will have the largest number of newest routes, with Frontier Airlines introducing four new itineraries from the Texan airport.

Meanwhile, Orlando International Airport
(MCO) and Tampa International Airport
(TPA) will each have three of the airline’s freshest routes, including the new coast-to-coast flight from Orlando to Los Angeles International Airport
(LAX), which will be operated daily.

Potential overlap

Data from the aviation analytics company Cirium showed that in April 2025, two or one month after the new routes are scheduled to be online, Frontier Airlines will have to compete against several carriers.

For example, out of Austin, Frontier will compete against Allegiant Air
and Delta Air Lines
on flights to Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport (CVG), Delta, Southwest Airlines
, and Spirit Airlines
to Orlando International Airport (MCO), and American Airlines
and Southwest to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport
(PHX).

Only Delta Air Lines uses a regional jet on any of these routes, with the carrier scheduling an Embraer E175
to operate its daily connection between Austin and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky. Other airlines have opted to use such narrowbodies as the Airbus A319, A320
, and Boeing 737
-800/737 MAX aircraft.

On flights from Orlando International, Frontier will have to fight for passengers against Southwest and Spirit on flights to Nashville International Airport (BNA), American, Delta, and United Airlines
to Los Angeles, and Southwest to Oklahoma City Will Rogers World Airport (OKC).

From Tampa, the low-cost carrier will face United on itineraries to Houston George Bush Intercontinental Airport
(IAH), Southwest and Spirit to Indianapolis International Airport (IND), and Southwest to Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport (MKE).

The only competitor-free route will be the aforementioned connection between Antigua and Barbuda and Puerto Rico.

Between December 2023 and April 2024, Silver Airways
had served the two airports with its ATR 42 turboprop, with Cirium’s forward-looking schedules showing that the carrier has not planned a return on the route.

Two routes are currently served once daily, but will see additional frequencies to accommodate holiday demand later in the month.

Significantly growing capacity

While Frontier Airlines has yet to file its schedules for April 2025 and beyond, in March 2025, the airline has planned an impressive growth of capacity compared to a year prior.

The airline has scheduled an additional 1,174 and 227,752 weekly flights and seats during the month, representing growth of 28.1% and 27.1% year-on-year (YoY), respectively.

Frontier Airlines’ executives expressed hope during its Q3 earnings call on October 29 that its revised commercial and network strategy will benefit the airline’s recovery toward double-digit adjusted pre-tax margins by summer 2025.

During the earnings call, Jimmy Dempsey, president of Frontier Airlines, said that overall capacity in 2025 will grow in the mid-single digits on an average stage length of around 900 miles (1,448 kilometers).

“Our simplified out and back network enters into its second year of operation as we progress through Q2 2025 with our new 2024 bases of Cleveland, Cincinnati, Tampa, Chicago and San Juan, Puerto Rico maturing from a commercial and operational perspective.”

Dempsey noted that in 2024, the company has been working diligently to improve its merchandising and fine-tune ‘New Frontier,’ the airline’s attempt to boost revenues as costs continue ballooning.
