Home carrier United Airlines
could potentially bring its largest jets back to Newark Liberty International Airport
(EWR) next spring to serve three transatlantic routes. The Star Alliance carrier is reportedly looking to bring the type back for flights to Frankfurt, alongside routes to Dubai and Rome.
Bringing back the big ones
The Boeing 777-300ER
is the largest aircraft in the United Airlines fleet. United’s models are configured to carry 350 passengers. The configuration is heavy on premium passengers, with 60 seats in United’s Polaris business class cabin. Another 24 seats are designated Premium Plus, alongside 62 in Economy Plus. The remaining 204 seats are in standard economy.

The widebodies last operated from Newark in October 2023, when they operated routes to Brussels (BRU), Frankfurt (FRA), and San Francisco (SFO). Earlier in 2023, the type also served Tokyo Narita (NRT), based on scheduling data from Cirium.

The Boeing 777-300ER entered service with Air France in April 2004.
The type may soon see a comeback at the New York City-area airport. According to independent route analyst Ishrion Aviation, United is set to bring its 777-300ERs back to Newark with three new routes.
According to data from ch-aviation, United Airlines currently operates 22 Boeing 777-300ERs, with one last reported as undergoing maintenance in Hong Kong. The majority of the fleet operates routes out of San Francisco (SFO), with destinations including Shanghai, Beijing, and Manila.
Several 777-300ERs also fly out of Washington Dulles International Airport
(IAD) and are scheduled to operate routes to Frankfurt and Brussels this month.
Where will they fly from Newark?
The widebodies are reportedly set to begin two of the routes next spring. The first destination is Frankfurt Airport
(FRA), Germany. A hub for Star Alliance partner Lufthansa
, Frankfurt currently receives Boeing 777-300ER flights from both San Francisco and Dulles. The Newark link appears to come online on March 29th, 2025. However, the flights have not been loaded into airline scheduling systems as of press time. A representative for the airline was not immediately available to comment.

A new route to the United Arab Emirates will also begin on March 29th. The carrier began service to Dubai International Airport
(DBX) in March 2023 with its 276-seat Boeing 777-200ER. The larger aircraft will accommodate 74 more passengers in each direction, and the route will become United’s fifth-longest 777-300ER service.

It was not immediately clear if the routes would be operated by new aircraft or if United would be downguaging other 777-300ER routes to free up the required aircraft. Simple Flying previously reported that United Airlines could acquire the aircraft from Japan Airlines (JAL), which is replacing its 13 Boeing 777-300ERs with Airbus A350s.
