IndiGo said on Monday that their codeshare partnership will start on December 16. The two airlines had entered into a codeshare arrangement under which IndiGo would help the Japanese carrier expand services to 18 destinations of the domestic carrier’s network.
Under the codeshare agreement, a flight ticket is booked on the flight number of the carrier that the traveller selects to travel with, however, it may be operated by another airline. It allows both airlines to expand their services on another’s network.
On Monday, the airlines said that the reservation and ticket sales for their codeshare flights will begin on December 4.
IndiGo already has codeshare partnerships with British Airways, Turkish Airlines, Qatar Airways, American Airlines, Air France-KLM, Australian carrier Qantas and Virgin Atlantic.
JAL will begin codesharing on domestic routes within India that connect to JAL-operated flights to/from Delhi and Bengaluru. Currently, JAL operates daily services between Tokyo (Haneda) and Delhi, and five times weekly services between Tokyo (Narita) and Bengaluru.
“India has seen remarkable economic growth in recent years, which is leading to a significant increase in air travel demand between Japan and India,” said Ross Leggett, Managing Executive Officer, Senior Vice President Route Marketing, Japan Airlines.
“We believe that this collaboration will not only enhance connectivity between the two countries but also foster stronger cultural and economic ties,” he added.
Abhijit Das Gupta, senior vice-president, network planning & revenue management, IndiGo, said this codeshare agreement would strengthen business, trade and tourism-related travel between India and Japan.
“It will also enable passengers of both airlines to explore some of the most culturally rich destinations in India and Japan, known for their history, culinary experiences, nightlife and significant landmarks,” he said.
“At a time when both the countries are strategically working together, this codeshare will add to the strengthening bilateral ties between India and Japan.”
