Brussels Airlines has announced a significant expansion of its operations for the 2025 summer season. The Belgian flag carrier plans to increase its capacity by 18% compared to the previous year, introducing new routes, enhancing existing services, and adding to its fleet. The expansion comes as the airline seeks to strengthen its foothold in Europe and beyond, with over 370 new employees joining its ranks to support this growth.
A Growing Fleet
Brussels Airlines will operate a total of 50 aircraft in summer 2025, including 11 Airbus A330s for long-haul flights and 39 aircraft for short- and medium-haul routes. To meet the surge in demand during the busy summer months, the airline will lease four Airbus A220 aircraft from Air Baltic, reinforcing its capacity and operational flexibility.
Strengthening European Connectivity
The airline’s expansion will see a total of 71 short- and medium-haul destinations in its network, an 18% increase in capacity over last summer. Routes to major European cities will see additional services, including Vilnius, Lithuania, and Tanger, Morocco. Notably, the airline will enhance connections to key British and German destinations, with daily flights to Munich and Frankfurt transferred from Lufthansa, signaling a strategic reallocation within the Lufthansa Group.
Similarly, routes to Zurich and Geneva, previously operated by Swiss, will now be handled by Brussels Airlines. These changes position the carrier as a central player in connecting Europe’s major hubs, offering travelers more competitive options for business and leisure travel alike.
Introducing New Destinations
One of the highlights of the summer schedule is the introduction of Funchal, Madeira, Portugal. Beginning in April 2025, weekly direct flights will connect Brussels to this picturesque island, renowned for its lush landscapes and mild climate. This addition expands the airline’s Portuguese network to four destinations, with increased frequencies also planned for Faro and Porto.
Focus on Mediterranean Growth
Brussels Airlines is doubling down on sunny Mediterranean destinations, appealing to the rising demand for leisure travel post-pandemic. Spain remains a key focus, with added capacity to Malaga, Barcelona, Valencia, and Madrid. Additionally, the airline will continue its new Fuerteventura route, launched during the winter of 2024-2025, throughout the summer, bringing its total Spanish destinations to 15.
Positioning for Future Growth
The 2025 summer expansion marks a pivotal moment for Brussels Airlines as it leverages strategic route transfers and an expanded fleet to enhance its market presence. By solidifying its role within the Lufthansa Group and investing in key European and Mediterranean connections, the carrier is positioning itself as a significant player in Europe’s evolving aviation landscape.
Travelers can expect more options, greater convenience, and competitive pricing as Brussels Airlines broadens its reach, paving the way for a robust summer travel season.
