Texas travelers, take note: American Airlines is expanding its new “gate lice” detection technology to airports across the state. Designed to prevent line-cutting during the boarding process, the system is rolling out just in time for the Thanksgiving travel rush.
The term “gate lice” refers to passengers who crowd boarding gates or jump ahead of their assigned group. With the new technology, passengers attempting to board early will hear an audible alert, and their boarding passes will be denied until the correct group is called.
The program, tested earlier this year, will now include over 100 airports nationwide, with Texas hubs such as Austin-Bergstrom International Airport already confirmed. Other major airports in Dallas-Fort Worth, Houston, and San Antonio are expected to join the lineup as well.
Julie Rath, senior vice president of airport operations for American Airlines, highlighted the program’s benefits. “This technology ensures customers board smoothly and fairly, and the positive feedback we’ve received so far is exciting,” Rath said.
For Texans flying with family or friends, there’s no need to worry — gate agents can override the alert to allow group boarding with an earlier traveler. However, the system’s main goal is to discourage crowding and streamline the boarding process.
As Texas airports gear up for one of the busiest travel seasons of the year, stick with your assigned group to avoid any unnecessary delays.
