Frontier Airlines
is adding first-class seats to its aircraft next year, starting in late 2025.

A shift to premium

Earlier today, Frontier Airlines announced big changes to its inflight product. The ultra-low-cost-carrier, which was considering a merger with Spirit Airlines a few years ago, is following in its rival’s footsteps. Frontier is adding first-class seats to its planes starting in 2025.

But new first-class seats are not the only thing that Frontier announced today. The airline is labeling its new changes The New Frontier, which includes additional things like upgrades. The first aircraft with first-class seats is scheduled to be deployed in late 2025.

Unlike other major airlines like United Airlines and Alaska Airlines, which have four rows of first-class seats on their narrowbodies, Frontier will only have two. The new seats will be set in a 2-2 configuration, with a total of eight seats per aircraft.

Frontier Airlines has now filed the aircraft type and schedule on its proposed flights from Washington-National to San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Along with the new first-class seats, Frontier is introducing free seat upgrades, which will be available early next year. Frontier’s Elite loyalty members will be eligible for upgrades on every flight. But, securing an upgrade will depend on availability.

Upgrades will be available to two different seats, the UpFront Plus seating, which gurantees an empty middle seat, or the first-class seats. Frontier highlights that this enriches the benefits of Gold Status and above.

Speaking on today’s announcement, Frontier CEO Barry Biffle, said,

“Travelers should expect more from their airline and, in 2025, Frontier will deliver as we continue our transformation into the most rewarding airline in the sky. We’ve listened to customers, and they want more – more premium options, like first class seating, attainable seat upgrades, more free travel for their companions, and the ability to use miles on more than just airfare. These changes represent an exciting new chapter in our transformation into The New Frontier.”

More changes

Frontier unveiled two other pieces of big news today. First, the airline is adding free, unlimited companion travel for Platinum and Diamond Elite members starting in the middle of next year. According to the announcement, this will be available on all bookings on any flight.

The airline added that the Companion must have a FRONTIER Miles account that must be added at the time of booking. There is no limit on the number of times the benefit can be used. Southwest Airlines has a companion pass, but passengers are required to designate one companion for an entire year.

Barring one, Frontier Airlines will compete on all of its newly announced routes.

With Frontier, passengers are not required to designate one companion. Once they earn the companion benefit, they can choose to fly with a different person on every trip. Starting in mid-2025, Frontier passengers will be able to begin using miles to purchase things like bags, seats, and other add-ons. Frontier has not announced the cost for these ancillary items but promoted transparent pricing across four tailored bundles: Basic, Economy, Premium, and Business.
