Travel is hitting record numbers around the US nationwide this year. With such a surge of travelers, delays are inevitable. In recent days, we have seen several examples, including delays and cancelations on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor, leaving several passengers stranded during the holidays.
In addition, American Airlines announced a nationwide outage earlier this morning. The airline did issue a brief update on X, addressing a passenger’s concerns. No timetable was given by American Airlines at the time, but it seems like order has finally been restored.
Let’s take a closer look at what caused the delay, and the latest on Amtrak’s Northeast Corridor.

American Airlines Resumes Flights An Hour Later After Nationwide Technical Issues
American Airlines has restored its service after announcing a nationwide technical issue. American Airlines provided a brief update on X during the delays.
American wrote on X, “We’re currently experiencing a technical issue with all American Airlines flights. Your safety is our utmost priority, once this is rectified, we’ll have you safely on your way to your destination.”
Thankfully, the technical issue didn’t last long and the Federal Aviation Administration lifted the ground stop just an hour later, resuming all flights. At the time of the issue, American Airlines did not issue any type of timeframe, and was trying to resolve the matter in the shortest amount of time possible. Not an ideal time for the delay, especially with a record number of travelers across the US.
Amtrak Also Saw Severe Holiday Delays
Air travel wasn’t the only service to experience difficulties during the holiday season. Amtrak passengers saw nightmare delays on the Northeast Corridor. Several trains were either canceled or delayed due to a power issue at New York Penn Station.
Amtrak wrote of the delays on its website, “Delays continue along the Northeast Corridor as crews address signal power issues impacting the tracks in and out of New York Penn Station (NYP). Customers should expect a significant delay in and out of New York (NYP) due to single tracking conditions potentially causing rail congestion along our network. Following crew constraints from yesterday’s events, all trains operating between Washington Union Station (WAS) and Boston South Station (BOS) may be impacted due to ongoing and residual issues along the Northeast Corridor. We have canceled select services to minimize delays.”
Just one hour ago, Amtrak announced full service was restored between Philadelphia and New York.
*Update: Acela Trains 2154 and 2173 just got canceled due to mechanical and equipment issues for service between Washington (WAS) and Boston (BOS).

AAA Predicted Record Number Of Holiday Travelers Across The US
AAA projected more than 119 million Americans to travel during the year-end holidays from December 21st to January 1st. Stacey Barber, Vice President of AAA Travel believes Christmas falling on a Wednesday is a major reason as to why.
“This is the time of year when lifelong memories are made with loved ones, and travel plays a big role in that. This year, with Christmas Day falling on a Wednesday, we’re anticipating record-breaking travel numbers the weekend before and the weekend after the holiday.”
Travel by bus, train, and cruise also increased by 10% this year during the holidays.
AAA is expecting record numbers for air holiday travel in particular, with 7.85 million passengers. The number would surpass last year’s total of 7.5 million air travelers, despite prices increasing by 4% compared to last year’s holiday season.
